I've never tried tofu before in my life and I think I want to give it a try. I'm just wondering what it tastes like, how do you cook it and what are some good things to cook it with...like recipes and stuff? can you just substitute it for chicken and stuff in normal recipes?? any help would be great...thanks!Using Tofu???
Tofu is by far the easiest thing to cook with. FIrst off don't be afraid to experiment. You can do anything you could possibly think of with tofu, fry it, bake it, eat it cold, marinate in absolutely anything! The best is to freeze it first, though we rarely do that as we want to eat it when we want to eat it! I can't cook worth a darn and my new found love it playing with tofu. My favorite thing to do is marinate it in soy and or teriyaki sauce, cut it into thin strips and fry it in a pot of olive oil. Its so crunchy and tasty! Stir fry some veggies, or steam some rice with it. Put it on a sandwhich! Dice it up and put it in a salad! I like to suggest my signature ';Egfu'; salad! LOL. Tofu in place of the egg, some veganaise and mustard and whatever else you like in an ';egg'; salad. Its super fast and super easy!
Here is a great site with loads of recipes, we haven't had to look elsewhere much, it always seems to lead back to this site.

Good luck !Using Tofu???
Here's a website with some recipes: http://www.tofu-recipe.com/
There are thousands and thousands of recipes online. You can use it to replace meat in almost every recipe.
Hi. Tofu is quite simple. Think of it as a sponge. Alone, it is bland. When infused, It simply absorbs the flavours it is cooked with. Flavour = time infused. The trick is use the right tofu, prepared correctly. Your best bet is to buy firm silken tofu. Put it in a strainer and press with a wide spoon or spatula, then place absorbent paper beneath and above. Place a heavy saucer or similar on top and place in refrigerator over night (you want it as dry as possible). Fry quickly with little olive oil. Cut to bite size, then add to stir fries etc. Great with really saucy dishes.
you can buy, firm %26amp; soft tofu.
i use firm to slice in strips, cook in olive Oil like french fries, dip in barbeq sauce.
also, ramon noodles ( drained ) dont use the seasoing packet, use sweet %26amp; sour sauce, drain the noodles, Add sweet %26amp; sour sauce, Slice tofu in cubes, %26amp; cook 3 min with the noodles,
Tofu is a soya bean curd, widely used in Japanese cooking. It is bland in flavour, high in protein and low in fat and may be found in the fridges of wholefood shops. Once purchased, you should take it home, cover it with water and chill, as it goes off very quickly. It may be served in salads, soups and sauces, or in a casserole.
TOFU WITH MUSHROOMS, ONIONS AND CHEESE
25ml sunflower oil
10ml butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced
25-40ml soy sauce
250g brown mushrooms, wiped and sliced
1 green pepper, seeded and diced
250g tofu
50ml toasted sesame seeds
25ml sherry
grated Cheddar cheese
Place oil, butter, onions, 25ml soy sauce, mushrooms and green pepper in a saucepan.
Cover and cook over low heat for about 10 min. until softened.
Meanwhile, pat tofu dry (using paper towels), cut into cubes and roll the cubes in sesame seeds
Add the sherry and extra soy sauce to taste to the mixture in the pan.
Top with the tofu cubes, cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes.
Sprinkle generously with the grated Cheddar Cheese, turn off the heat and leave for 5 minutes before serving.
Serve on brown rice, or rice mixed with cooked brown lentils in equal quantities and tossed with a little finely chopped parsley and a nut of butter, with an accompaniment of a fresh green salad or vegetables.
Makes 4 large servings.
Omnivorous does not equal normal!
Vegan/vegetarian recipes are ';normal'; too. ;)
I like to cube the tofu and broil it, then add it to dishes OR dip it in soy sauce, coat it in nutritional yeast, and saute it in a small amount of oil. There's a million things you can do with tofu. Search www.vegweb.com. Good luck.
Just have an open mind. I really think that you should have someone who is professional or someone who cooks tofu often make your first tofu experience enjoyable. If you have a bad experience for the first time your opinion may become jaded and you may not eat soy products again. Good Luck and enjoy!!!!
If you live near a health food store, I recommend the baked flavored tofu's from Soyboy brand. The have Smoked, Carribean and Italian flavored. I find them to be good because they are firm and hold up when put into recipes.
Tofu is getting a really bad rep these days and is not as healthy as once thought. Do some research.... I would use it as a addition to recipes and not the main source of protein. I like it in miso soup and stir frys. The taste is generally bland but you can add soy sauce to it. Japanese restaurants and sushi bars are a good place to experiment how it should properly be served.
