i've always wanted to try tofu, and i just bought some. problem is i have no idea how to cook it. any ideas? What to do with tofu?
It depends what variety you have bought. Is it silken, or extra firm?
If it's silken you can use it in Chinese style soups, smoothies, ';cheesecakes'; or steam it with a bit of light soy sauce, sesame oil and scallions.
If it's extra firm, you can chop it into chunks and deep fry it or stir fry with it with noodles/vegetables. In this case, you can use it like you would use meat. It's like a sponge and will absorb all the flavoUrs you cook with. What to do with tofu?
That is the beauty of Tofu...you can make it into anything you want. It's basically chalk that is waiting to be molded into something. Look for recipes on the packages or in magazines for something that seems appealing to you and have a go at it. Good luck!!!
i like stir frying it with different things. Just think of it as the protein in the meal instead of a piece of meat. What ever you cook with meat can be replaced with tofu.
braise it
Check out 'Tofu Cookery' by Louise Hagler. Vegetarian Times will occasionally have ideas...
eat it, great for art projects, or......have a tofu salad toss!
Throw it away. I am sorry, I just do not like it. Hope you find some great recipes. Good luck!!
Vanilla Tofu
Ingredients:
2 slabs firm tofu, about 1 cm. thick
cornflake crumbs
1 tbsp. cooking oil (canola oil works well)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Instructions:
Instructions: Put the oil onto a pan over medium heat. Add the tofu, and sprinkle cornflake crumbs liberally over it. Turn and repeat on the other side. (Add more cornflake crumbs to the pan to mix into rice or pasta if you want.) Sprinkle the vanilla extract over the tofu, and continue cooking until you're in danger of burning the extra cornflake crumbs (a few will turn black). Enjoy!
The first thing I would do is freeze it for 24 hours, take it out, let it unthaw. Once you take it out of the package, squeeze as much of the water out as you can without breaking it. Then you can cut it into cubes or strips and pretty much do whatever you want with it. Freezing it will take the mushiness out of it when it's cooked. Some ideas: cut into strips and marinate in oil, vinegar, chili powder, garlic and a little lime juice for a couple of hours. Then chop some peppers and onions into strips mix with the marinated tofu and either bak or fry until onions and peppers are tender. Get some tortillas and make fajitas.
Cut into cubes and bake in barbeque sauce. Cut into cubes and make a stir fry. Cut into strips and soak in soy sauce and oil then roll them in breadcrumbs and bake on an oiled cookie sheet for un-chicken strips.
The important thing to remember is once you take a large portion of the water out, it will taste like whatever you marinade it in. The possibilities are virtually endless.
