What is a good way to cook tofu?

okay I just decided to become a vegan and i want to experiment with different foods and i wanted to know how to cook tofu cause i tried and it came out tasting horribleWhat is a good way to cook tofu?
Well. I was a vegetarian for years then vegan. I did OK, but now I'm doing much better physically. Now I eat meat because I realize it's needed for MY particular metabolic type. I would strongly suggest you get a metabolic typing test. I also suggest you read voraciously on the subject. You should be finishing a book a week, like you're doing a Masters degree. Books and education will be the strong arm you can depend on to lift you out of a fog of ignorance, and in the process you might ignite a passion to help others as a Nutritionist, Personal Trainer, Health Coach or a Nurse.

You mention in your query, that you're thinking about tofu in pursuit of your new vegan diet. Again, your choice may be perfectly fine, but there is research that show the phytoestrogens in soy maybe harmful to you. Even as a Vegan, I didn't eat soy. Your options should be guided by what your labs, blood work, mucosal membrane, and hormones test show. Phytoestrogens maybe helpful for a woman with PCOS, but then again it may be harmful for YOU. Seek out an open minded ND or better yet a functional nutritionist, they can help walk you though the process and help pull you out of the fog. You need to take the right test and see what is right for you. Once that is done, you may determine that you feel better or worse on your new diet, then adjust from there. That's on you.

Some people thrive wonderfully on Vegan or Vegetarian diets and some will injure themselves. If you feed your child a Vegan diet and she is not fit for it, then you could be causing permanent growth plate and teeth damage and increase your risk for osteoporosis. I won't tell you what to do because I was once Vegan and I know how strongly and vehemently you will defend your position, as I once did. But I will ask you a few simple questions that took me years to come to terms with; is a diet that is so highly predicated upon supplementing to achieve a complete vitamin and protein profile truly sustainable? What does it take to package (oil), ship (oil) and sell a supplement (usually from China)? Is the environment damaged in the process? Is your decision a natural yearning for your body or is it driven by deep political or religious motivations? If it is a physical yearning, is it fair to expect others to follow your path? Are their yearnings different and if so can you respect that? Are you trying to prove something to a family member that you are consciously or subconsciously angry towards (ego)? Are you ';getting back at mommy'; by eating a vegetarian diet? If one of the above, is that reason congruent with YOUR personal dietary needs? Maybe these are some of the questions you should be asking before you go full out. After all, your body doesn't care if you are a Hindu or a Progressive, or a Republican, if you aren't getting b12 and folic acid and tryptophane it's (your body) going to give up on you. Why should you have to take a pill to get, B-12 or tryptophane or tyrosine?

I will list some books below. I should note that the books listed are from Vegan, Vegetarian, and Carnivorous authors. It is crucial that you read from a wide spectrum of opinions, so that you may derive a more balanced conclusion. I hope you take the discipline and time to order, and actually read them. Some of them may seem off topic, but if you actually read them, you'll understand.

I also recommend listening to the progressiveradionetwork.com. They have shows about eating a Vegan diet. Gary Null's show is particularly informative and he is also a Vegan. You might also want to look for the ';underground wellness'; podcast.

Those two things alone will substantially boost your knowledge base, which you will need to make intelligent diet discisions for you and your family.

There are many wonderful Vegan recipes on Gary Null's site, so I suggest you look there.

Joy to You, and good luck on you new diet! What is a good way to cook tofu?
you need to marinate tofu for few hours, like if you marinate meat or chicken or breaded with good seasoning
Tofu is a great food that will absorb the flavours of the medium it is cooked in.

I dice it and add to a stir fry.
Tofu is a lot like a blank canvas. sort of like chicken. Start looking at it like that and you will be able to do amazing things with it.

Definitely go for the firmest tofu you can find, it has more possibilities, but soft tofu has its uses too.

a) soft tofu - blend it thoroughly to a smooth paste and use in place of a mayonnaise or sour cream for your favorite dips and vegetables. (a tofu-naise some would call it)

b) firm tofu - cut into cubes marinate with soy sauce, jamaican jerk, or some of your other favorite marinades and make them into kabobs for grilling, with some fresh vegetables in there for color.

c) firm tofu - cut into cubes, toss in salt and pepper and dredge in flower. sear all sides in a wok with hot oil or a deep fryer if its available to you. this is my favorite way to have tofu and i am not even vegetarian. when you have your crispy tofu 'nugget's feel free to use them in stir frys, or toss in a louisiana hot sauce like they were bit size boneless chicken wings.

a) soft tofu - blend again until it is very very smooth and mix with your favorite vegan friendly syrups or fruits to make smoothies, use honey to sweeten. maybe sounds a little gross now but dont bash it till you try it.
Marinate in soy sauce, honey, sesame oil and a bit of black pepper. Cook on high in a frypan or on the BBQ. (For firm tofu)
I'm fairly new to vegetarianism, but this is my favorite way that I have found so far:

Freeze some extra firm tofu, defrost, squeeze out the extra water, and cut into cubes.

Put a little bit of oil (don't use a ton, so its still healthy) in a pan, and put tofu in oil. Leave for a few minutes, until its kind of crispy/ golden brown and then flip. Remove from pan once the other side is also crispy golden brown.

Pat off the excess oil and put the cubes in a bowl. Add a bit of soy sauce and garlic powder. Mix up tofu.

That's it! Serve over rice or another grain. Also tastes great by itself!
