How can I vary the food I eat...?

How I vary the food I eat because of my diet? I'm Asian so my family of course cooks rice every day. I'm an animal lover and I've thought about becoming a semi-vegetarian but I grew up eating meat all the time and it's on the table everyday. It would difficult for me to give up meat but how can I limit my intake? How can I incorporate other foods into my diet during dinner? I don't eat lamb, tofu is good when made the right way as well as spinach. What dishes are there that can go with white rice that doesn't contain much meat or none at all. I eat white rice everyday for dinner so I don't have a choice. The only thing that is different are the dishes/side dishes. How can I vary the food I eat...?
I did the same thing a few years ago. Focus on one or two non-Asian countries to start with (I started with French and Greek), either go on-line or get a couple of cook books from the library and pick a few dishes from each. Make a point of making a dish or two per week. Then go on and find other countries whose cuisine appeals to you. It worked for me - I now have a bigger/better repertoire. Takes some work but it is worth it!How can I vary the food I eat...?
you dont need to diet if your asian, silly.
the only thing i can think of, is to use (beans (and/or) bread) in your diet.

Limit you meals to (2 or 3) a day!
Brown beans and rice is good. Okra tomato and corn on rice is good. Black eyed peas and rice is good. red beans and rice is good. Jambalaya, gumbo, etoufee, google all that.
Hi

It is always difficult changing your diet when food is on the table for everyone, what I would suggest is this, if you make a vegetable main course or a fish course others can share your food but you get the main portion. It does mean you have to cook everyday but you want what you want right?

You can have so many things with rice.... Okra, Stir fry with beansprouts and carrot, lentils, beans, Dosa with vegetables, Using frozen mixed vegetables is a short cut as well seasoned what ever way you like them. You could even try fried rice with mixed vegetables. Start looking at recipe books in the shops to come up with ideas. Even menus from restaurants may give you ideas.

I know the economy stinks, but why doesn't anybody want to hire me?

I would like to ask a couple questions?

I'm almost 18. 5'3 - 5'4 and I weight about 119-124. Is that normal? or above average?

Another thing is that I've been dieting and trying to lose fat and I've been counting calories, doing push ups and crunchers and other stuff at home (reps throughout the day) and I've been monitoring and recording my diet and avoided sugary stuff or at least not as much as I ate today.

Today, however, I kinda splurged.. Today I ate:

A peach, and a handful of Apple Jacks for breakfast (I have small hands). And then I went out for a 30 minute casual walk to the supermarket.

Then for lunch I ate 2 slices of wheat bread (45 calories each slice), with laughing cow cheese, small amount of ketchup, and a boca meatless burger pattie. I had a 90 calorie rice krispie treat bar with a tablespoon of ice cream on top of it. and a can of diet soda.

Later today, I ate two pieces of pitted dried prunes. and a nutrigrain bar (blueberry) and a 30 calorie bread cracker thingy.

For dinner, I made 8 servings of shirataki tofu noodles for my family with these meatless meat shreads and white mushrooms with a bit of oyster sauce, cooked (stirred fried in a pan without oil). I ate 2 bowls of the noodles and a diet soda

This is where I kind of splurged. I ate a peach, 100 calorie oreo mini cakesters, a banana, sugarless jell-o which is 10 calories, a 90 calorie low fat quackers chewy bar, and this 80 calorie pack of kid's gummy candy thing that my mom bought for my little sister..

Afterwards, I went on my daily run which is about 60-70 minute run. I don't walk at all during this run..

Was my calorie intake %26gt; calorie burned? Also, if my weight is normal, I am pretty flabby/fat in the stomach area.. is it because I have too much sugar intake? How do I get rid my fat?I would like to ask a couple questions?
Your problem is that you dont eat things that keep you full. You eat a lot of empty calories.

From your foods listed I am guessing youre a vegetarian.

Add almonds to a fiber/protein filled cereal like Special K protein with sliced fruit on top. Oatmeal works too.

Add a green salad with low calorie dressing to your lunch with soy or black beans (tons of protein and will keep you full)

With dinner add some kind of bean or other protein (even a soy protein shake would help)

Stay away from diet soda... it contains sugar substitute which can actually make you crave sweets more.. and has high amounts of sodium, which can dehydrate you.

Instead of eating things like oreo cakesters, have apple slices... or orange... or any kind of fruit for that matter.

Try to eat more protein and nutrient rich food.... and drink at least 80oz of water a day. This will definitely help you feel better and keep from feeling hungry.

and no... youre not above average in your weight... youre actually on the smaller side. Try adding in some weight lifting to your workouts to give you muscle mass and more definition. Lifting weights also helps to burn fat faster.I would like to ask a couple questions?
1
you're normal. Fat can be burned by getting the right exercise. Try swimming in the summer.
I hate when people get on yahoo answers and obviously pretend (or stretch the truth WAY far) to have ';problems';. You are obviously looking for someone to say ';O NO! You have a eating disorder, mabey anorexia';. I don't know whether your insecure or what, but I'm sure you can find better things to do (or ask!). I can't imagine you meeting a new person (on your ';60 minute uber-intense run';), O I get online and try to get people to tell me I need help for shits n giggles. FIND A NEW HOBBY!

Do I have some kind of disorder?

I workout as much as I can..

On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, I do..

12min 5.5mph

6 min 3.5mph

2 min 7mph

2 min 6mph on the treadmill

some light ab/weight workouts

40min on the stationary bike, leisure. i probably bike around only 13-14miles within those 40 minutes.

and then on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, I do a cardio kickbox class at 24 hour fitness.

but some days I feel super tired and I'll skip one or two days out of the Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday routine.

Then on food wise, every morning I eat the unsweetened, original, quaker instant oatmeal. no lunch, then when I come home (2:30) i drink a couple cups of hot tea and 1 fuji apple. then, normally I would go workout. And for dinner I usually eat steamed vegetables, or soups, or fruits.

Occasionally I'll eat wild caught salmon or chicken breast. and that's mainly my only resource of protein, and tofu.

Do you think this would be over 1000 calories?

Oh, and I'm 15, and weigh about 92lbs.

I also walk my dog for about 30 minutes everyday, and that's not including how he stops and sniffs and stuff. But it's always a light/regular walk.

But I still think I'm fat. And I for some reason refuse to eat anything cooked with oil, red meat, and pasta/rice whenever I'm at home. And when I'm at a restaurant, I'm very very picky.

Is my lifestyle heatlhy?Do I have some kind of disorder?
Ok you don't have a disorder at the moment but if you let things continue on you could start banning more foods and then end up anorexic so i suggest that you go and consult a medical proffesional about a healthy diet good luck :)Do I have some kind of disorder?
Nope. Not a healthy life style. The food your eating adds up to less than 300 calories. Your mental state is not in good condition. It's not like your anorexic or something like you want to be, but you sound like a very boring person. Go exercise with your friends instead of going on machines.

How tall are you?
You are grossly underweight unless you are under 5ft. tall.

Go to ';calculate BMI'; and see for yourself.

Because you are obsessing and think you are still fat, yes, you very likely DO have anorexia nervosa.

See your doctor and get a referral to a counselor who specializes in eating disorders.

Vegetarian: I need ideas for meals?

(I don't eat meat or fish, I DO eat dairy and a lot of it. Because of a health problem, I can't eat foods high in carbs)

I'm trying hard to eat healthier, but I never cooked until recently and am having a hard time coming up with meals. they need to be something I can prepare in advanced so I can use leftovers for meals over 2 or 3 days.

Right now I eat omelette's for breakfast, peanut butter sandwich for lunch, and usually tofu and veggie stir fry for dinner.

I also need something I can take for lunches that doesn't need to be heated up. I was going to make a bean salad without all the oil and stuff. Not sure how it will taste, but I'll give it a try.

Does anyone have suggestions for fairly easy to prepare meals that don't take a ton of ingredients, and I can use the leftovers?Vegetarian: I need ideas for meals?
Here are a few websites for you:

http://www.vegcooking.com/f_holiday_cook鈥?/a>

http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm

http://www.ivu.org/recipes/

My daughter is vegan and I use these websites to make food for her, I am sure you can find whatever you desire on these sites.

Good Luck:)Vegetarian: I need ideas for meals?
I'm vegetarian ( i don't eat eggs, meat or fish)

i love BOCA BRUGER, meatless meatloaf, beans. Honestly there's tons of recipes online!! have fun looking:)
My current favourite is a vegetarian shepherd's pie - substitute brown lentils for the ground beef, mixed with barbecue sauce for more flavour.

For lunches, I'm a big fan of avocados and hard boiled eggs. I spread half an avocado on two slices of whole wheat bread, and layer with sliced eggs. Or make a spinach salad, with sliced eggs and chunks of avocado (not too ripe, firm is better) with your choice of veggies and dressing.
Eating the way you are eating now, you will become more unhealthy with vegetarian food.

Here are a few ideas for you:

(1) Cook 1-1/2 to 2 cups of rice in a pressure cooker. My wife usually adds 2 to 3 cups of water to 1 cup of rice. This will become at least 4-1/2 to 6 cups after cooking. Eat at least 2 cups of rice for lunch and dinner along with the following two:

(2) Cook at least 1 cup of lentils. You can cook both lentils and rice in a pressure cooker and they will come out fine. Add plenty of water to lentils. The lentil we usually use is called ';Toor Dal'; and can be found in Indian stores.

(3) Cook plenty of vegetables in plenty of water. Add a pinch of salt. My wife adds ';Masala'; (again try Indian stores) in addition to salt but that is because we are from India and we love hot and spicy food. Everyone should try it too. Make sure the masala has turmeric; studies after studies have shown turmeric to be highly beneficial. You can also buy turmeric and add it to the vegetables while boiling.

These, along with milk will keep you healthy.

For breakfast, I either eat breakfast bars made of oats or I cook oats (about 1/2 cup is good). I add chutney powder (Indian stores) and some salt to make it interesting.

You state that you cannot foods high in carbs. If rice is an issue, try other whole grains like wheat or whole eats.

I highly recommend that you (and any others who read this) buy a cook book on South Indian food and learn to cook South Indian way. It is probably the best way to cook food. The only caveat: It can be spicy and too much cooking of vegetables (especially frying) which is sometimes used by Indians is not good. Avoid oils and fatty substances.
Grilled veggie and cheese quesedilla- Can use the grilled veggies for your omelet the next morning.

Bcoz i am a man?

Because I'm a man, when I lock my keys in the car I will fiddle with a wire clothes hanger and ignore your suggestions that we call a road service until long after hypothermia has set in.

Because I'm a man, when the car isn't running very well, I will pop the hood and stare at the engine as if I know what I'm looking at. If another man shows up, one of us will say to the other, ';I used to be able to fix these things, but now with all these computers and everything, I wouldn't know where to start.'; We will then drink beer.

Because I'm a man, when I catch a cold I need someone to bring me soup and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You never get as sick as I do, so for you this isn't an issue.

Because I'm a man, I can be relied upon to purchase basic groceries at the store, like milk or bread. I cannot be expected to find exotic items like ';Cumin'; or ';Tofu';. For all I know these are the same thing. And never, under any circumstances, expect me to pick up anything for which ';feminine hygiene product'; is a euphemism.

Because I'm a man, when one of our appliances stops working I will insist on taking it apart, despite evidence that this will just cost me twice as much once the repair person gets here and has to put it back together.

Because I'm a man, I must hold the television remote control in my hand while I watch TV. If the thing has been misplaced, I may miss a whole show looking for it (though one time I was able to survive by holding a calculator).

Because I'm a man, I don't think we're all that lost, and no, I don't think we should stop and ask someone. Why would you listen to a complete stranger -- I mean, how the hell could he know where we're going?

Because I'm a man, there is no need to ask me what I'm thinking about. The answer is always either sex or baseball, though I have to make up something else when you ask, so don't.

Because I'm a man, I am capable of announcing, ';One more beer and I really have to go';, and mean it every single time I say it, even when it gets to the point that the one bar closes and my buddies and I have to go hunt down another. I will find it increasingly hilarious to have my pals call you to tell you I'll be home soon, and no, I don't understand why you threw all my clothes into the front yard. Like, what's the connection?

Because I'm a man, you don't have to ask me if I liked the movie. Chances are, if you're crying at the end of it, I didn't.

Because I'm a man, yes, I have to turn up the radio when Bruce Springsteen or The Doors comes on, and then, yes, I have to tell you every single time about how Bruce had his picture on the cover of Time and Newsweek the same day, or how Jim Morrison is buried in Paris and everyone visits his grave. Please do not behave as if you do not find this fascinating.

Because I'm a man, I think what you're wearing is fine. I thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was fine, too. Either pair of shoes is fine. With the belt or without it looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine. Can we just go now?

Because I'm a man, and this is, after all, the 90's, I will share equally in the housework. You just do the laundry, the cooking, the gardening, the cleaning, and the dishes. I'll do the rest.

Serpentine

Eats the praise

of his MySpace pictures

like it is a 30 course meal.

He has got so much,

“OMG you are so hwat!”

around his waist

he can’t get out of his chair

anymore.

The tally of friends

on his MySpace

would fill the dining hall

of Windsor Castle,

The Forbidden City,

and Versailles

and have started to

round out his chin

making him a little

pudgy.

Of course

he doesn’t see this

when he takes his

professional photos

at high angles

he sees his

“amazing eyes”,

“cute smile”,

and “sick hoodie”.

and so in an

entrepreneurial endeavor

he marketed himself

as the latest a greatest

piece of sugar coated eye candy

with a cause since MLK

serving everyone

a long blog on how

he didn’t care

what anyone thought

and they could all

**** themselves

he would be famous

and they would be nothing.

He disposed of

anyone with any criticism

by having his 13 year old wait staff

remove them

from his restaurant

through spamming.

He expanded his enterprise

to Stickcam where

he had a “cooking show”

which was an hour of

giggling and comments

about how cute and noble

he was trying to educate people

about eating healthy,

that his tofu burgers were, “nummers”.

He felt his success was so

great that he started to ask

his patrons for “tips” in the jar

so he could expand his cause.

But soon his devotees began to notice

that his sauces were thinner

his meals were not as well rounded

the fruits of his show were not as fresh

but he had new clothes and a new haircut,

his face looked just slightly different

around the chin.

Then on a Friday evening

his ego empire,

his saccharine shrine to himself

was raided, desecrated

by hackers who sprayed

his entire teenage crop with

pesticides.

It was as if someone

had put too much salt

in the soup,

nothing could be done to make

it taste better..

Serpentine steamed

in all caps blog

about this recipe of disaster

with very few complete words

and almost no punctuation

except for the !!!!!!

it was just big slab of

rank steak that nobody wanted.

His internet had rotted away

everything he had

cooked up was spoiled

and his gluttony weighed

down on him

like a sack of old potatoes.

He called a the local

computer store to order up

some tech support

but the “Jerk!” at the store told him

“We are fresh out.”

So he got rude

and started boiling up,

and the clerk calmly told

Serpentine to “Go **** himself”

and hung up.

It's a little annoying that the line breaks are so frequent. I love the saccharine shrine to himself bit. Instead of soup, compare it to Carthage?

I can't think of a way to have the image of the snake eating itself. Perhaps he begins to eat his tail to try to satiate his need for attention, as a motion of insecurity?

I'm going to be a vegetarian- can you give me some tips?

I'm almost 12(yes, I know, it's a young age to start!) and I want to be a vegetarian because:

A) I HATE killing animals. I HATE anything to do with torturing a pig to make a piece of pork taste good! And whenever I go into the meat section of the store, I think, ';WHY? WHY!!! I'm surrounded by animal body parts- THE GUILT!'; No seriously. I hate those people who kill animals because ';they couldn't make eggs'; or ';their milk tasted sour';. Well... What if WOMEN and COWS switched places, and the cows would kill the women because they couldn't produce any more milk?! WELL? *sigh* Sorry I go on these long rants. Onto B..

B) I think the way I eat is DISGUSTING. Not only because I eat meat that my mom cooks, but because I eat meat, then milk, then ice cream, then bread, then... well yeah. And I STUFF myself. Then I thought (after being very bloated): What if I did all this with vegetables? I could be WAY more energetic!

And I did my research for a few months, I've slowly introduced fruits and vegetables more often, and I've cut back on the fat (well, because I'm slightly overweight for my age and sort of short of height. I'm trying to be more healthy! And I DO exercise. Well, I try to!)

But I don't know what I should get the next time we're shopping. I know, protein and such. Should I buy tofu? How much tofu/beans? *gasp* Ooh cucumber sushi is vegetarian isn't it? I wonder how I can make some...

So YOUR job, is to tell me what I should do for meals. And how I can pig out on vegetables instead of ice cream! For some reason, eating carrots makes me miss ice cream and crave meat! Eww! I hate my eating system. It actually LIKES meat... (Well I like meat BEFORE it's killed and turned into beef/pork.)

Oh, and what tasty(like sushi!), filling, healthy vegetarian meals I can have every day?I'm going to be a vegetarian- can you give me some tips?
I am very excited to see such a young person taking their dietary health so seriously and doing it so intelligently. Well done on the transitionary addition of fruits and veggies. That is exactly what I would have recommended.

Beans and rice (white or brown is ok, which ever you like better and are more likely to actually eat is best) are a good go-to. Canned beans are a good convenience food if you can't or don't feel like soaking dried beans over night. Soaked/sprouted beans do have a much better flavour and a more complete protein though. Beans and rice make a complete (meat-like) protein. Soy beans have complete protein on their own. So does quinoa. Soy is best when sprouted or fermented, like in sproutofu or tempeh. Tempeh is a fermented patty of pressed together soy beans. It is healthier than tofu because it still has all of it's fiber in it and the fermentation process removes the phytoestrogens that keep coming up in debates about soy products. Cut it into quarter - half inch slices and steam it for about seven minutes, then saute in some sunflower oil or olive oil (sunflower is best for high heat, olive oil looses nutrients in the heat and becomes a less healthy fat). I like to put it in stir-fry, pasta with veggies and tomato sauce. And consider brown rice pasta (they have it at trader joes) it is much better tasting and more nutritious than whole wheat pasta. It is wise to substitute rice, quinoa or spelt for wheat whenever you get a chance to avoid developing a wheat allergy.

Split pea soup is very satisfying and filling and good for you. I keep a two quart mason jar full of split peas in my cabinet all the time. They don't go bad. I also have one full of rice, quinoa, black beans and pinto beans. It's nice to have on hand. Anyway take 1 part dried peas to two parts water and start boiling. Chop all the veggies you want, potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, garlic, parsnips, beets, fresh/frozen peas and add them when the peas start to get soft. Salt and soy sauce are a nice addition. I make a big pot and keep it in the fridge for a week. It keeps very well. Lentil soup is also really satisfying and good with chunks of sauteed tempeh. Some weeks I only eat sauteed veggies and brown rice or quinoa for dinner. Find some sauces you really like (prepared sauces or sauces from scratch) and add them to veggies and rice for variety. One of my favorite things to do is stir-fry some veggies (asparagus, peppers, snow peas, tempeh, broccoli, carrots) with some garlic pepper sauce (Sriracha is my fav) and soy sauce and a little bit of peanut butter. Serve it over rice. It's so good!

If you are going vegan this is a good sometimes-treat, it is pretty high in fat:

Vegan French Toast

Mash one banana in half a can of coconut milk, 2tsp vanilla extract and a splash of maple syrup. Mix well. Soak bread briefly and fry in sunflower oil on a very hot griddle. Serve with berries and maple syrup or make a hot berry compote by adding a small amount of water to some frozen berries and heating until hot and juicy. Add a little agave maple or agave syrup if you must.. it is a treat!

Baked potatoes with hummus, tahini and chives are lovely. Oh! And yam fries. Slice yams french fry style, brush with olive oil and sprinkle with rosemary (fresh chopped or dried powdered) and bake at 400 until they start to darken (about 30 or 40 minutes). MMmm...

A nice miso soup (you can get miso paste in the asian section of the store, make sure it doesn't have ';benito flakes'; that's fish) is always good. Just boil it and add thinly sliced vegetables like carrots, green onions, cabbage, seaweed, radish, edamame, etc. Thinly sliced things take less cooking time and retain more nutrients. Rice noodles make it seem more meal like. And it is a nice dish to serve with avocado and cucumber sushi.

Good luck! And don't let anyone tell you you aren't getting enough protein. Most Americans get 3 to 4 times more protein than they need which acidifies the blood and causes osteoporosis as your blood draws calcium out of your bones to alkalize itself (yes, milk is bad for your bones). Don't make the mistake a lot of vegetarians make by replacing meat with cheese. You are not doing your body any favors. Cheese is one of the worst things for your digestive tract. It is very clogging and nutrient blocking. If it's not organic it is loaded with pesticides that are stored in the cow's fatty tissues until they are released into the milk. Best to skip dairy altogether, but if you just can't yet, go organic.I'm going to be a vegetarian- can you give me some tips?
You should be put in jail for saying that milk is bad for your bones you moron. Cheese is not nutrient blocking, or very clogging whatever that even means! AND hummus has Tahini in it, so to say add hummus and tahini is redundant.

cucumber rolls are vegetarian. just make some sushi rice. chop some cucumbers and avacados. roll seaweed over those. get some wasabi to serve with it.

here is 40 thousand vegetarian recipes

http://www.recipezaar.com/recipes/vegeta鈥?/a>
eat fruits like apples ,oranges etc
It's not really clear what you're asking-

First, most vegetarians consume both eggs and dairy products, which means you do not have to give up ice cream.

Second, vegetarians are not bound by law to consume tofu. I cannot remember the last time I ate any.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has a Vegetarian Starter Kit which should answer most of your questions-

And Vegetarian Teen will probably prove useful-

The most important thing (with regard to nutrition) is to learn to cook. Find recipes online, or buy a good starter cookbook. When most people go veg, they rely too heavily on highly processed soy foods.
Okay, I give this list to a lot of people who are asking what to do when they first go vegetarian. At first I followed it, but now I've stopped and I've found that I'm losing my appetite and feeling weak and sometimes dizzy, so I think I'll be going back to it.

-PROTEIN

Plant proteins should provide for you enough, as long as you make sure your calorie intake is high enough for your energy needs.

-MORE AMINO ACIDS

If plant proteins simply aren't enough, try eating whole grains, nuts or seeds.

-IRON

If you're not totally vegan, egg yolk provides iron well. However, dried beans, dried fruits, and spinach are good sources as well.

-VITAMIN B 12

This only comes naturally from animals. It can be found in some fortified (not enriched) breakfast cereals such as Total and some brands of nutritional brewer's yeast, or in supplements.

-VITAMIN D

You will need a reliable vitamin D source. If you don't get a lot of sunlight, you'll probably need a supplement.

-CALCIUM

Studies have shown that vegetarians absorb and retain more calcium than meat eaters. Cool, huh? Calcium can be found in greens such as spinach, kale and broccoli, and some legumes and soybean products.

-ZINC

Grains, nuts and legumes are good sources. If you chose to take a supplement, be sure to pick supplements containing no more than 15-18 mg zinc. Supplements containing 50 mg or more may lower HDL (';good';) cholesterol in some people.

--And some more tips--

Keep your intake of sweets and fatty foods to a minimum. These foods are low in nutrients and high in calories.

Choose whole or unrefined grain products when possible, or use fortified or enriched cereal products.

Use a variety of fruits and vegetables, including foods that are good sources of vitamins A and C.

If you use milk or dairy products, choose fat-free/nonfat and low-fat varieties.

Eggs are high in cholesterol (213 mg per yolk), so monitor your use of them. Limit your cholesterol intake to no more than 300 mg per day.

I eat a lot of rice, and I either get a box of flavored rice-- I really like the broccoli and cheese flavor-- or I'll get white rice and sprinkle Mrs. Dash 'garlic and herbs' on it.

I also really, really like fettuccine alfredo. It's like a gift from heaven.

And salad, I've found that the smell of ranch dressing can make my mouth water now. I love salad with like romaine letuce and spinach leaves, carrots, cucumbers, black olives, tomatoes, and green peppers, with a lot of ranch dressing.

And fake meat! Boca and Morning Star are the best. Just like in almost everything else, with fake meat the off brands and store brands suck. My favorites would have to be the Boca ';chicken patties';, and the Morning Star ';hot dogs'; and ';Italian sausage';.

I've never had tofu so I can't help you there. I'd really like to try it sometime though. As for beans. Uh, I don't eat a lot of those either. Actually, besides green beans, since going vegetarian and refusing pork and beans, I've only eaten beens once. It was in this thing, that was in the part of the freezer section of the store called vegetarian, a box of ';veggie cakes';. I can't quite remember everything in them, I know there were beans and rice though. But it was really good with some ketchup, I'd like to have them again some time.

But yeah. That's what I've got for you. And I'll link you to some recipes in the sources box. So good luck!

Balsamic Portobello Steaks

Ingredients:

1/2 cup balsamic vinegar

1/2 cup olive oil

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

2 garlic cloves, minced

6 large, fresh portobello mushroom caps, each

about 1/4 lb., brushed clean

Directions:

In a large, shallow, nonreactive bowl, stir together the vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, parsley and garlic. Add the mushrooms and turn to coat. Let stand at room temperature for 1 hour, turning once. Drain before grilling.

Prepare a charcoal or gas grill for direct grilling over medium-high heat. Oil the grill rack.

Place the mushrooms, gill side down, over the hottest part of a charcoal fire or directly over the heat elements of a gas grill. Cook, turning once, until moist on the underside and just firm to the touch on the top, 4 to 6 minutes per side.

Arrange the mushrooms on individual plates and serve hot. Serves 6.

Peanut Braised Tofu with Noodles

Ingredients:

1 lb. firm tofu, cut into 3/4-inch cubes

1 cup snow peas, trimmed and halved

1/2 lb. thin fresh Chinese noodles

1/2 cup coconut milk

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

1 Tbs. chili paste

1 tsp. sugar

1/4 cup vegetable broth

2 Tbs. soy sauce

2 Tbs. fresh lime juice

Directions:

Prepare the tofu

Line a baking sheet with a double thickness of paper towels. Arrange the tofu in a single layer on the towels. Top with another layer of towels and pat the tofu dry.

Cook the vegetables and noodles

Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. Add the snow peas, cook for 30 seconds, remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the noodles to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions. Drain the noodles, rinse well under cold running water and drain again. Set aside.

Braise the tofu

In a saucepan over medium heat, stir together the coconut milk and peanut butter until well combined. Stir in the chili paste, sugar, broth, soy sauce and lime juice. Add the tofu and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is hot and the tofu is heated through, about 2 minutes. Stir in the peas and noodles. Divide among bowls and serve immediately. Serves 4.

Protein bars...are they a good alternative to protein intake for vegetarians?

First off i think it's interesting how people find it difficult to stop eating meat. i stopped when i said i wasn't going to eat meat. sometimes i will smell someone cooking it and it'll smell good, but i dont give in. ew! lol jk

but anywho on to my Q:

ok so are there any other ways to get protein other than beans and tofu? beans make my tummy tooooo full and then it hurts [no gas, but i think its just all those darned beans in my tummy]

and tofu..i dunno how to prepare it or what to prepare it with. the only time i eat it is when i go to my favorite thai food restaurant [soooo good! i think i need to go there soon lol]

i was eating balance protein bars [cookie dough] for a while but found out they have fish gelatin [uck! i hate seafood! even thought they dont put actual fish in there, the thought of fish gelatin is gross] and i don't eat power bars, but i found out they have beef gelatin [uck!] in them

sooo should i just stick to eating beans? oh and meat substitute [like morning star farms?]

i make some mean axx meatless chili [with red kidneys and black beans] and like a 17 bean and barley soup mix with veggies, but dang, thats too many beans!!! lolProtein bars...are they a good alternative to protein intake for vegetarians?
Protein is found in every single food source on this planet, except for oils. Eat a well-rounded diet and you'll be just fine.

Tofu is very easy to prepare. There are two kinds you can get:

1. Firm or Extra Firm. This tofu is best for cooking. Slice it however you'd like (thick slices, thin slices, cubes, etc.) and cook with whatever you'd like. Use tofu in a similar way that you'd use chicken. And, like chicken, you should season it and also brown it up a bit. Like making chicken soup, you can just let the tofu simmer in a soup stock.

2. Soft or Silken. This tofu is for blending. You can blend this to make stuff like mousse or pie filling, or you can blend it into a smoothie (use about 1/4 cup soft/silken tofu per serving). Just add whatever flavors/fruits/etc. you normally would.Protein bars...are they a good alternative to protein intake for vegetarians?
I like boca burgers :) But you probably don't need to worry about your protein intake that much. People eat way to much protein really. I know you hear so much **** about how vegetarians don't get enough but it's bullshit made up by the meat industry and people that don't want to change their unhealthy meat eating lifestyles.
I'm 14 and I've been a vegetarian for a couple months.

It's very important for be to get protein, because I speed swim.

I don't like tofu...

Switch it up a bit and eat lentels instead of beans somedays.

Drink protein shakes, could have oatmeal and chocolate milk. simple.

Peanut butter, nuts etc.

I hope this helps...
no, and besides you don't have a protein issue when you eat a balanced fresh produce vegetarian diet.
Honestly you don't need to worry about protein. Eating protein bars is kind of pointless because they're so darn expensive.... Try eating nuts and peanuts, delicious!
Mix up a little soy protein powder with peanut butter and spread it on a chocolate rice cake - wayyy better than a protein bar and you get the same benefit.
i'm a vego and i agree with what everyone has said so far=)
I don't suggest protein bars. I had wanted to gain weight but stay lean and started eating them daily when I was working out at a high level, and they caused excessive gas and a laxative effect. I would stick to the basics such as peanut butter, nuts, and the many suggestions you've received, the protein bars are high in fat and depending on your work out regimen may not be a good choice/ aside from the stomach issues you'll develop if you eat them too often, I was eating about 2 a day. Also, Yes they have allot of vitamins and protein packed in, but it honestly allot better for your body to get it from unprocessed foods if possible. Not to mention all the things you named in the bars that disgust you!

Good luck

xo
i think you should just google how to prepare tofu. really, i would assume it can be cooked in a skillet with whatever you're cooking and the sauce. i doubt tofu is that difficult to make. i have never tried, but, i imagine there are recipes that tell you ways to prepare it.

beans have fiber, too. maybe that is why your stomach is getting upset. fiber helps fill you up and helps digest food. so, i would still try and consume black beans.

if you eat eggs- eggs are good source of protein. you can also try a whey protein powder.

i would be careful with the protein bars. they could have a lot of calories and sugar that you don't need.
eww... protien bars.

eggs are really good source of protein.

There is protein in grains (breads, flours, rice, flour) combined with legumes/beans (tofu, chickpeas, kidney beans, re-fried beans, peas, lentils).

Also there is protein in nuts. And small amounts in vegetables.

It's really really easy to get protein - I seriously wouldn't worry about it.

Look at the recipes in this site:

You shouldn't just be eating protein bars to get enough protein! Try chick peas, tofu, milk, cottage cheese (or other cheese), beans (like kidney, black, navy etc.), soy milk, yogurt, lentils, eggs, nuts or soy flakes. You can have a protein bar from time to time if you're on the go. Try the Odwalla super protein for something made without gelatin. (By the way, check the yogurt you get because a lot has gelatin in it)

How can I lose weight right as a vegetarian?

I dont eat eggs or eat dairy, No fish, no meats from animals of any kind. I dont eat tofu because even the smallest amounts make me have bad reactions because of the estrogen levels. Ive been vegetarian for over a year and went from 178 to 144.5. I eased through alot of my platues that I struggled with when I ate meat. Now my plateu is 144. I want to be 100lbs, 105 max. How can I kick start my weightloss again. Should I start eating salads? I never ate salads before only balanced cooked meals with veggies, nuts and grains. Should I cut out the bread and white rice?

I also use a soy protein powder with soy milk. For what ever reasons the only soy product that bothers me is tofu.

I will never eat meat again. When I was eating meat my weight kept climbing up and up. I would probably be over 200lbs by now had I kept eating meat products. I dont want to eat dairy or eggs either, however, I still eat regular condiments and preprepared foods that have small amounts of dairy or egg (bread, mayo, salad dressings, veggie patties).

I will admit my weightloss so far has been slightly easy peasy. I exercised moderately and I sort of fell out of that and am resuming. I know to get to my goal, Im going to have to put in more effort! How can I lose weight right as a vegetarian?
First of all, think of what your goal really is. Is it to be healthy, or skinny? Depending on how tall you are, 100 lbs is very low for an average woman. If you're at 144 already, you might want to make your goal more of around 120 or 115 before you go all the way to 100, that much weight loss can be dangerous. Also, if you are planning on exercising more (which would be a good idea if you want to lose weight/be more healthy) you need to make sure you are eating enough of all the important nutrients, or you could get very sick. I failed at being vegetarian because my goal was around 100 lbs, I exercised a ton everyday, and I only ate a tiny bit. Plus, no protein. So I got really bad anemia and other health problems. Since you're already into a year of being vegetarian though, you might know your stuff. But changing your diet plans when you're vegetarian is hard to do in a perfectly safe way.

Because I'm A Man?

Willys cynical thought for the fugging day,

This sign will be posted wherever I work: ';We don't discriminate against crazy people, but if you're stupid you're on your fawking own!';

Because I'm A Man -

Because I'm a man, when I lock my keys in the car I will fiddle with a wire clothes hanger and ignore your suggestions that we call a road service until long after hypothermia has set in.

Because I'm a man, when the car isn't running very well, I will pop the hood and stare at the engine as if I know what I'm looking at. If another man shows up, one of us will say to the other, ';I used to be able to fix these things, but now with all these computers and everything, I wouldn't know where to start.';

We will then drink beer.

Because I'm a man, when I catch a cold I need someone to bring me soup and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You never get as sick as I do, so for you this isn't an issue.

Because I'm a man, I can be relied upon to purchase basic groceries at the store, like milk or bread. I cannot be expected to find exotic items like 鈥淐umin'; or ';Tofu'; For all I know these are the same thing.

Why would you listen to a complete stranger-I mean, how the hell could he know where we're going?

Because I'm a man, there is no need to ask me what I'm thinking about. The answer is always either sex or football, though I have to make up something else when you ask, so don't.

Because I'm a man, I do not want to visit your mother, or have your mother come visit us, or talk to her when she calls, or think about her any more than I have to. Whatever you got her for mother's day is okay, I don't need to see it. And don't forget to pick up something for my Mom too!!

Because I'm a man, you don't have to ask me if I liked the movie. Chances are, if you're crying at the end of it, I didn't.

Because I'm a man, I think what you're wearing is fine. I thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was fine, too. Either pair of shoes is fine. With the belt or without it looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine. Can we just go now?

Because I'm a man, and this is, after all, the 1st century, I will share equally in the housework. You just do the laundry, the cooking, the gardening, the cleaning, and the dishes. I will do the rest.

Interesting... and insightful... but true... I wonder what will the response to that... ';Just because I am a Woman?'; would be.... let's face it... it was a woman who gave birth to men... men do not like the fact that more and more women are and can be just as capable... the only thing different... either sex lack what the other needs to procreate... a penis and a vagina.... please don't discriminate against me because I am just a woman.... you truly have to be a woman... to see where we are coming from.... then men wouldn't take us for granted.............Because I'm A Man?

I've been feeling a little blue today but when I read this I had to smile. Thanks for cheering me up!
Thanks for clearin' that up!!!
Thanx for the blurb from another man.
OH, Please, As a Man I really Confirm These!!!
What would women do without us men ? I do believe you covered all the bases.
yep...yer are absolutely right 'bout that..!!! i agree...

How to modify this Chinese hot pot recipe to use chicken rather than beef?

It's not exactly an authentic Chinese hot pot recipe. It came from my mom's Jenny Craig recipes book, but my dad LOVED it and told me he wanted it again but with chicken and tofu rather than beef. Basically, the way I made it was boiling carrots and mushrooms in a mix of water, vegetable broth, red wine vinegar, and soy sauce. After 5 minutes of simmering, I added some noodles and simmered another 5 minutes. I then added 2 Tbs of corn starch (mixed with 1/4 cup water) and simmered that an additional 1 minute, so it was nice and thick. I then added the beef, which I had sliced into very thin pieces (stew meat sliced into 1/4 inch strips, just about).

Okay! So, according to the recipe, as soon as I'd added the beef to the boiling soup, I turned off the heat and let it just sit in the broth for 5 minutes. This left the beef pinkish, but cooked. However, I'm very nervous about how to modify the recipe for chicken. I know rawish chicken can make you REALLY sick. How long should I boil the 1/4 inch strips of chicken so that they are well-cooked without my dad complaining that I turned his chicken into shoe leather?

All answers appreciated. If you know a good website for this sort of thing, that would also be great. I'm a vegetarian and still new to cooking meat and am very scared of it. If I give my dad food poisoning, my mom will kill me.How to modify this Chinese hot pot recipe to use chicken rather than beef?
I would make it the exact same way. Chicken breast will cook quicker than beef and should be completely cooked within the time that your thin beef strips were slightly pink inside. Check the chicken right before you serve and if still slightly underdone, give it another few minutes.

Why are people so turned off by vegetarian food?

I am vegetarian and a lot of people ask me how I survive without eating meat. First of all, I am vegetarian by choice. For me, I have access to a lot of good vegetarian food. My mother is vegetarian and she cooks very well. Her food is very good and she makes all kinds, indian, italian, chinese, mediterannian. I love all vegetables and tofu is my favorite! I also eat a wide variety of exotic fruit, such as pomegranate.

However my friend hates all of that. She doesn't like tofu or pomegranate. All because she tried them before in a way that is disgusting. A tofu shake, sounds gross. Pomegranate juice, I've never tried it but I love the fruit. She probably wont try these ever again because of bad experiences with it.

That is what I blame. People are so turned off by vegetarian food because they try it once and it wasn't a good source to try it from if you understand what I mean.

Please comment on what the other reasons are.Why are people so turned off by vegetarian food?
Some meaters just don't like vegetarians.

Actually, there isn't a meater in the world that doesn't like vegetarian foods. We eat them all the time, they're called ';side dishes';. We eat veges and beans etc......we just don't eat the faux stuff, because we have the real deal. Why are people so turned off by vegetarian food?
I think some people just love meat too much to give it up. I respect vegetarians and their choices, but I couldn't give up meat even though I love many vegetarian dishes and have vegetarian cookbooks.
well it's pretty silly since 'vegetarian food' has some kind of different connotation for people than just the fact of eating some vegetables or fruit, or bread or pasta! i can eat plenty of foods without meat - but i won't necessarily eat healthy!
meat stimulates the enzymes in ur saliva to break up more food and it leaves u the feeling that u hav eaten more n it is actually tastier.

vegetables ...healthy as they are dont seem to stimulate this kind of a feeling unless it is cooked along with some other content that activates ur taste-buds

technically its all in the subconcious mind. wat u c is what u believe. if u try sum gud vegetarian products u wud probably hav a better attitude 2 it
Many people eat with their eyes, and if they don't like what they see they will say they don't like it

You could put a plate of food in front of me and I will taste it.

If the taste is wrong for me I will tell you why and ask if there are other ways to prepare it.

I have never tried tofu but if I can make it to my taste I have no problem putting it on my plate.

Omnivore
I enjoy vegetarian food; it's how it is prepared that is essential.
Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes all animal flesh, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and slaughter by-products.[1]

There are several variants of the diet, some of which also exclude eggs and/or some products produced from animal labor such as dairy products and honey. Veganism, for example, excludes all animal products from diet and in some definitions from attire also,[2] whether or not the production of clothing or items has involved the actual death of an animal (dairy, eggs, honey, wool, silk, down feathers, etc.).

A generic term for both vegetarianism and veganism as well as for similar diets is ';Plant-based diets';.[4]

The reasons for choosing vegetarianism may be related to moral, religious, cultural, ethical, aesthetic, environmental, social, economic, political, taste, or health concerns.
You are probably right. I think a lot of people think that being a vegetarian means that you eat nothing but veggies, rice and tofu.
Mock meats and meatless meals are so different from what people are used to, especially if they are raised as a meat eater.

Most of the time it takes an ';acquired'; taste but this isn't always the case. I believe if someone is really adamant about adopting this type of lifestyle, they will find a way to make it work and get through any hurdle that may come along.

Also, vegetarians don't just have to eat ';pro-vegetarian'; type food found at the grocery store - you know like items from Morningstar Farms, Gardenburger, etc. We can eat *anything* we want MINUS the meat.

Check out http://maketheconnection.co.nr for more information on a vegetarian/vegan diet!
I've always wondered this myself and I'm a meat eater.

There are some vegetarian foods that I like a lot.

Pasta, for one. Granted, I've grown up with it.

Tofu, when prepared right, is great. Especially in Miso Soup.

It probably comes down to bad experiences.

I used to drink Milk with EVERY dinner meal I ate at home. Cereal in the morning, and milk and cookies sometime as well.

then I downed a glass of spoiled milk after having Milk and cookies.

I haven't been able to have milk since, even when its fresh it tastes bad to me.

Mock meats can be very good, but I HATE Gardenburger varity ones.

Boca plain is great, though. I found that out when my parents made some of those for themselves to try it, and the ';real'; burgers had some crap spice on them. I still like real burgers, but crappy spice is crappy spice.
I see it as being your choice, and i respect that. It is no different than your friend making the choice to eat meat, in which you must also respect. I personally love meat. i hunt and fish, but on the other end of the spectrum, i love veggies and fruits as well( not all but very many). If, you are a vegetarian because of health reasons, there are many ways to eat healthy while also eating meat. Depending on what type of meat you eat, how often and how big of a serving plays a large role on its health benefits. I also think that many people dont have access to somebody (such as your mother) who can cook great vegetarian meals while also having the time to do it. The bottom line is that everyone has their own choice in foods and just because you like tofu, doesnt mean everybody does or has to, and you can't get upset about it either.
im not a vegeterian, but i luv that fake chicken ya'll got it's like really good, i have a friend who is a vegetarian and i used to think she was crazy but she let me try some of the stuff she ate and alot of it taste pretty good, i think we jus all like meat, i mean somehting we can sink our teeth into, but everyone's different
They can't get past their view that being selfless is a sign of weakness.

It's really very sad.
I have no idea why people stay completely away from the food. I think soy, tofu, and mushroom based products are absolutely delicious! The biggest reason they don't like it is because they don't give it a chance.
I'm a vegetarian and I think that people assume that it is disgusting because it is simply not meat ! I always thought tofu was weird until I tried some that was prepared correctly. Once people are exposed to different types of food they will adjust.

Vegetarians can eat everything that is not meat- that leaves alot of food open to try! So many! Not everyone has to eat ';mock-meats'; such as veggie burgers and the like. (I have tried some and liked them and disliked a few) I think that because alot of people have always eaten meat they assume that nothing else cannot compare.(wrong) I think that one has to try many different dishes then they can decide for themselves whether they like ';veg food';. To try two veg dishies and proclaim that they are all disgusting is very ignorant.
I love vegetarian food. Meat is gross and it always made me feel bad when I ate it (I mean like sick, a little guilty too though). I'm way happier since I've become a vegetarian. My little brother who's twelve recently became a vegetarian and he likes it too, his favourite foods were hamburgers before he went vegetarian too, and he became one of his own volition. Yay vegetarian food! :0) Anyway, I think what a lot of people don't realize for some reason is that they actually do like some vegetarian food, it's not like they eat meat with everything, is it? You're right too though, a lot of people try one vegetarian thing (like a tofu shake), don't like it and get totally turned off of vegetarian dishes because of one bad vegetarian food they tried. I'm sure there are things with meat in it that she doesn't like either.
Honestly, I don't think most people are turned off by vegetarian food. Almost everyone I know will have a slice of plain cheese pizza or spaghetti with tomato sauce now and then. I think a lot of meat eaters may be closed minded about tofu or other ';weird'; vegetarian foods, but many eat ';accidentally'; vegetarian dishes pretty regularly.

I went to lunch one day this summer with five girlfriends. I was the only vegetarian but there was only one meat dish ordered between the six of us. And these ladies know full well that I have no issue with them eating meat in my presence. It just so happens that some of the vegetarian dishes sounded very appetizing.
There are a lot of people out there that prefer meat with every meal - and scoff at vegetarian food being rabbit food but the fact that there are literally thousands of food combinations made with vegies and from all different cultures as well. But the fact is these stade people just cant get out of their comfort zone and cannot try new things.
They are incapable of thinking critically, and so it has never occurred to them that the majority of what they eat IS ';vegetarian food';.
We have been taught since we are chlidren that all our meals need to contain meat as the main ingrediant. Its simply brain washing.....

People need to get over that and realize all that meat is unhealthy and unnatural.

GO VEGETARIAN

Peace

GG
I think you answered your own question.

In addition;

A lot of times what people try to do is to replace the meat or ';pretend'; to eat meat, like making burger patties out of ground mushrooms or shaping tofu to look like a turkey. If you're not going to eat meat why do you want to pretend to eat meat? People are disappointed when the pretend meat doesn't taste like meat. I really think that's a big one.

Also, we're supposed to eat meat and we like meat. It's unwise to eliminate an entire food group from your diet unless you're very careful about the it.

  • How do you use fresh turmeric and lemongrass in Thai curry?

[background] I am fortunate enough to live near an international food market, specializing in Asian foods.

[recipe] I have been making curried tofu using powdered (Korean-- at least that's the language on the package) curry, fresh vegetables, fresh ginger, coconut milk and, of course, curried tofu (the market has pre-curried tofu -- I've never seen it anywhere else).

[recipe] I sometimes add Thai hot peppers as well, but I know how to work with them (de-seeded chiles are less spicy, cooking increases intensity, wash hands frequently with dish soap to avoid ';chili hands';)

[recipe] [important] The recipe does not include peanuts because my boyfriend is very allergic. I generally add a few drops of sesame oil instead. He is also allergic to almonds, walnuts, etc. but nt nuts. We do not know about cashews (what we know about his allergy comes from accidental exposure -- for obvious reasons, he is not inclined to experiment).

[question] The market also has fresh turmeric and fresh lemongrass, which I would like to include in my curry recipe, but I do not know how to use them. I just bought some fresh (ish?-- the very tops are somewhat dry, but I have never seen lemongrass that does not have that quality, although I have also never seen lemongrass in that form anywhere but that market).

[question] The fresh turmeric is next. It looks like a ginger root, so I was thinking of using it like I use the ginger, but I don't know if that's correct. How do you use fresh turmeric and lemongrass in Thai curry?
Fresh turmeric is like ginger and as Dave C said Galagal, you can chop both the fresh turmeric and lemongrass, just peel both, and they are used in Thai curry paste to, with other ingredients, mashed in a food processor to a paste for long cooking dishes, you can hand pound then with a mortar and pestle, but your not going to get the fine texture a processor gives.

I buy them both, clean them and keep them in my freezer, like you here in Toronto Canada, I have the world at my beckon call, I can get anything I want from the 4 corners of the planet, and as chef, used many of them in my career, as I worked in Asia, Canada and the Caribbean.

Yes Galangal is different than Ginger it is more medicinal, not as pungent, it and th other ingredients are the base for red, yellow and green curry's, it is the chili's, coriander and turmeric that determine the colour. How do you use fresh turmeric and lemongrass in Thai curry?
I thought Thai curry uses galanga, which looks like ginger, not tumeric.

    Lemongrass for sure.

Will you share your simple dinner/lunch ideas with me?

So, my boyfriend and I are not the cooking kind. We've never participated in cooking family dinners as children, and eventually just ended up living off of ramen noodles, mac n cheese, and grilled cheese before we met. We now live together, and we're sick of eating the same things over and over again.

Like, I'm fine with side dishes like salads, potatoes, veggies, etc. But for main dishes, other than chicken or steak, I don't know what else to make. For a long time we were constantly eating Banquet salisbury steaks and chicken parmesans that come in the boxes... I NEED VARIETY. PLEASE HELP!

To make giving me the recipes easier on you, here are the qualifications:

    The cheaper the better.

    The easier the better.

    The quicker the better.

    The more delicious the better.

    No tofu or soy, please.

    No fish, please.

Nothing that requires a grill (i live in a little apartment, the best I have is a forman grill which tends to burn the outsides before the inside is even cooked)

Cooking websites that include your favorite recipes help, too.

Please do not list hot dogs, lunch meat sandwiches, or grilled cheese as I already know how to make those. =)

Feel free to add a more complicated dish, but please at least have a simple one to add as well.

I'd really like to thank anyone and everyone who will be adding. I really appreciate the help. Will you share your simple dinner/lunch ideas with me?
I know how you feel - I am not a fan of cooking. When I got married my husband and I both thought the other would cook for us. So what happened is that we ended up going out to eat a lot, and had a lot of spaghetti.

About a month ago I decided it was time for us to eat better. I looked on KraftFoods.com (I think that is the website) and looked at their healthy living. Most of the recipes on that site only require about 10 minutes prep time. And so far - they have been really good. I had to do some grocery shopping, because we didn't have any ingredients in our home, but now that we are getting into the swing of things it is fun.

We set up a meal plan - just so we wouldn't have to think about what to make. You can even tell it not to give you fish recipes. Pretty nice.

I keep being surprised by the cool food I can make in the same amount of time as it took to make Mac and Cheese. Will you share your simple dinner/lunch ideas with me?
go to allrecipes.com they have really awesome things to make on there, thats where i get my recipes most of the time, good luck. oh and we make sphaghetti, taco's, hamburgers, easy things thats are sometimes quick and sometimes we sit and have a family meal, but since we have a baby its whatever we have time for good luck!!!

    Martha's favorite tuna salad sandwich

    12 oz good quailty tuna

    2 celery stalks chopped

1 apple such as gala or Macintosh peeled and sliced

    3 tbsp light mayo

    2 tbsp fresh chopped basil

1 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice

    8 best quailty sourdough

    salt and pepper

in a medium bowl combine tuna, celery, apple, mayo, basil and lemon juice..mix well. Season with salt and pepper. Divide tuna salad among 4 slices of bread to with another slice and serve.

Chickpea, cherry tomato and feta salad

    1/4 a can chickpeas

    1/2 cup quartered cherry tomatoes

    1/4 cup crumbled feta

    1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

    2tsp olive oil

    1tsp dried oregano

    salt and pepper

Rinse chickpeas. In a bowl combine chickpeas, tomatoes, feta, lemon juice, olive oil and salt and pepper. Serve.

    also

Get a rotisserie chicken from Sam's club. If you have one near you. They are only $4.99 - delicious and huge. Kroger has some for the same price. They are good too.

Just cut some up and put in a Ziploc storage container. Put in some cooked broccoli or mixed vegetables - pour a little Caesar or honey mustard dressing on. Voila.

Here some others that I use -

Cut up the chicken and add mayo, grapes and almonds for a great chicken salad.

Make a pot of Tuna helper fetticini. These keeps well for lunches.
You can make any kind of pasta with the sauce you like (in a jar or can, cream sauce or tomato based). Add chicken or beef if you like.

You can make noodles with butter and add in some peas. Serve with a simple hamburger.

Eggs can be made any style. A nice omelet with some rice on the side or good crusty bread would be lovely.

Canned soups can be dressed up by adding your own fresh or canned vegetables or noodles or rice.

You can use those microwave baked russet or sweet potatoes and dress them up with cheese, chives, scallions and sour cream.

Buy bagged salad and add the fixins you like, even prepared grilled or Italian style chicken strips would go well with this.

You can heat up some canned or jar or packet turkey gravy, make some stove-top or pepperidge farm boxed stuffing, open a can of cranberry sauce and serve alongside some deli turkey - you can even warm the deli turkey in the sauce and serve it over bread for a super easy hot open turkey sandwich.

I know you don't want hot dog recipes, but have you tried making them differently? Slice the dogs into pieces and cook in a mixture of one can honey baked beans and one can of pork and beans, cover until all is hot and it is so good and different than regular hot dogs in a bun.

Is this a healthy meal plan?

i'm trying to lose the weight before june like every other girl who's got a little extra weight lol

okay i plan to exercise by doing tae bo in the morning and walking home from school every day, which is 5 miles away from my house. when i build the endurance i'll jog from school.

    breakfast [done in a hurry]

    oatmeal

    banana

    water

    lunch:

egg sandwich [two slices of toasted whole grain bread with a little mustard and a cooked egg in it]

    water

    after school:

    6'; veggie delite from subway

    water

    dinner:

broccoli and tofu.. i don't know how many calories this has because it's my dad's recipe. i'll ask him about the ingredients later.

    should i cut/add anything?Is this a healthy meal plan?
Add a little variety. Only eating the same thing over and over again gets almost painful.

Also, subway isn't the greatest for you, and cutting back on any meal possible is best. I only eat two meals a day, a breakfast and a dinner. My Boi, you have to cut back on not only what you eat, but how much of it you eat as well. Eat only until you're more or less full, and eat slowly so you don't surpass what you actually need to eat.

But the walking home from school is a good idea, a better idea is to walk both ways. Doubles your endurance training, then at night a little bit before bed (which if you go earlier the better) do Tae Bo, that way it will tire you out, and it will help you sleep easier. Is this a healthy meal plan?
Pretty good, try adding a higher souce of carbs/protein to your diet.

    Because youre a man?

THIS HAS BEEN A PUBLIC SERVICE MESSAGE FOR WOMEN, TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE MALE ANIMAL.Because youre a man?

After you go vegan, how long does the detox phase last?

I went vegan about 2 weeks ago (for health, environmental and animal reasons.) I have heard that when you go vegan your body goes through a detox phase and you tend to break out. I broke out a lot the first week, I have noticed however that this week the zits are less frequent and smaller- how long will this last?

As for my diet, although I do eat a lot of raw, I do eat some cooked vegan stuff. (i.e. last night we made corn pasta baked with marinara, spinach, mushrooms, tofu, onions and garlic.) However I do eat VERY healthy and will not eat anything processed or ';junk.'; Only organic/ natural stuff because that's what I enjoy. After you go vegan, how long does the detox phase last?
It's different for everyone. I didn't even break out...it cleared up my skin, to be honest. Just wait it out and you'll be fine. After you go vegan, how long does the detox phase last?
    probably long. ask a doctor.
Well, I am a vegan, and there are other ways to get the protein that you need. It won't last long. Trust me the first week I was a vegan, well lets just say you didn't want to look at me to long! :) Once it passes over, you will have really beautiful skin!!
don't listen to anime. she's wrong and her friend is NOT a vegetarian. My body got used to it after about a week, but I only became a vegetarian.
It takes any amount of time depending on the person

Your body will try and make you think ';OMFGZ I NEEDZ DA MEATS!'; but hold off and you will get used to it
Congratulations! Sounds like you are very educated about veganism too :)

The breakout phase should be coming to an end - It happened to me too and didn't last long at all. Now my skin is clearer than it ever was and my energy levels are out of this world! Vegan since December 27, 2008 and its so easy. Good luck :)
Detoxify from what? If you ate organic foods before you became a vegan, there are no ';toxins'; to detoxify your body from to begin with.

As for your ';facts';, many Americans suffer from ';urban disease'; because they eat too much period. Not because they eat meat, but because they eat more than they burn or need, Obesity is not caused by eating meat, it is caused by eating too much. You can argue all you want but no food has ever been found to cause a specific disease. Mediterranean and Pacific Islander societies eat a lot of meat yet do not suffer from diseases that Americans are notorious for having, In fact, these societies are often considered the healthiest of so cities.

Actually humans have always consumed meat. The modern post man, homo sapiens, has always been a meat eating animal. If you are referring to the original hominids from where we came, these beings are no longer generally considered as ';men'; although they are the ancestors of modern man. But for the sake of argument, note that the discovery of fire was predated by meat consumption, Therefore man ate raw meat and still eats raw meat. But why would you insist that any person who eats meat ahs to eat it raw as if they were still ';cavemen';? If that is the standard, then why do vegetarians have to cook their food too? They should just forage, not cultivate and plant, for food and munch them off the ground or off trees raw (raw rice, potatoes, beans etc) . No cleaning, no sorting, no paying of third world farm workers to harvest them for you, Go find your own food like the herbivore that you say you are ';designed'; to be. And you vegetarians are so obssessed with cows and pigs and other big animals that need to be hunted with tools, You always forget that other animals such as insects, fish, rabbits snakes, smaller mammals etc can be hunted without tools. The only reason why men started hunting alrger animasl was because the early communities were getting larger and needed bigger animals to be fed proeprly especially during the winter when incidentally, most plant foods aren't available. Try planting cabbage in three feet of snow and you will understand what I mean. Your type of vegetarian/vegan needs to think outside the vegetarian/vegan propaganda box.
My detox lasted a little under a week. Everyone's body reacts to changes differently but I would be surprised if anyone was detox-ing for more than 2-3 weeks. Acne lasting longer than that is most likely unrelated to your new veganism. Any number of things can cause break outs.

@exsft: Where did all that come from? So you don't believe in detox, okay. If you want to see it for yourself, go vegan for a week, and see if you don't get acne or diarrhea or headaches. Then you can talk.
First off, humans have always eaten meat, its part of our vital diet. If you take that away then your body won't fully function. you will become dangerously unbalanced (anerexic). At least put some sort of meat in your diet. My friend is vegitarian and the only meat she eats is chicken beause she knows that you 'need' meat in you daily consumption. We were adapted to eat meat so that is what are body says it needs. It would be unhealthy not to give it a vital protein. In chicken it has needed essential oils for your body.

  • Are the items on my list Vegan?

Hi all. I've decided to take a plunge into becoming a Vegan. I've always been a vegetarian (which was always against my mother's wishes. too bad mom!). I made a list of things I would often eat for granted. I would like a yes/no answer for each item (with an explanation, but only if you like). Some items on this list may seem obvious or stupid....Please excuse my ignorance. I'm really not sure, that's why I'm asking someone who does know. It's like a Vegetarian who talks about the sick bastards who eat meat, while at the same time; takes a bite out of his tuna-fish sandwich (';It's not meat! It's just fish!';.....smh, get your facts straight, and don't be afraid to admit you're wrong!). Sorry for the rant. I bump into these people at least twice a week. LOL. 6-Pretty much all soy milk and soy proteins are vegan. One that isn't is Quorn,it has eggs in it. if you're not sure, check the label,or ask someone.

7-probably.I'm pretty sure saltines are vegan as are most animal crackers. Check the label is you're not sure

8-yes. Only time it wouldn't be,though I've never seen it,is if it's stuffed with cheese or something. I don't know if that exists, though.

9-some are vegan. Ones that aren't are things like frosted mini wheat, for example. It has gelatin. Check the label to see if there's milk. Some muesli have milk. Some cereals have honey, gelatin, milk or even yogurt(which is milk,of course)

10-maybe-some wrap breads are vegan some are not. Check the label or ask,if you're buying it made already from the store

11-? yes,of course flour is vegan. Flour is just ground grains. You should be aware that white flour is bad for you

12-yes and no. White sugar is not vegan or vegetarian. It is refined by being put through bone char. Unrefined ';raw';sugar is vegan. Brown sugar, the kind you would use in oatmeal,is most like not. It's the same as white sugar, because brown sugar is white sugar mixed with molasses

13-no.unless it's just vegetable sushi. Sushi is fish, which is not vegan or vegetarian

14-yes there really is vegan chocolate. What do you think dark chocolate is? Milk chocolate has, well, milk in it. Some dark chocolates add other things, like nugat (made from milk) or sometimes other ingredients which would make it not vegan. Most of the time, though, dark chocolate is vegan. Check the ingredients ladel

15-yes,yes,and yes,as long as you don't add milk. Try to buy fare trade products, though. The coffee indusrty really exploit its workers.

16-yes,though I would only go to a reasonably decent place. They care more about the ingredients they use. Usually the grease is just sesame oil or other oils. Be sure you ask for no egg, chicken or beef. Make sure you check about any broth that it is used. Most times, you have to stay away from the soups, they are often with a meat broth. Check out your area, you may very well have a vegetarian/vegan chinese restaurant. They're quite popular.

17-Yes,I suppose so,though most all restaurants also fry chicken, fish, etc in the same oil. your choice. You can always ask what kind of oil they use,,but if it's a nice place,it's most always vegetable oil.

18-maybe-I only use sea salt. Regular salt may go through the same system as white sugar but I'm not sure. stick to sea salt,it's better in so many ways.

19-yes,if they're not made with milk or have added cream of butter. You can request it made vegan at many restaurants. ask.

    20- don't know. I don't eat such foods.Read the label.

21-no-they are made with milk and eggs

22-maybe-read the label. Some may have gelatin.

Jesus gave people fish because it was a story made up by human beings.

Here are some sites you definitely need to read. You should have done some bettter homework. Also,I hope you're eating better than the junk on this list.If you're an unhealthy vegan/vegetarian,you won't be able to keep up with the diet. Eat lots and lots or whole foods, vegetables, fruits,WHOLE grains, meaning brown rice, quinoa, spelt, kamut, barley(not pearl),amaranth, etc. drink lots of clean, fresh water. Exercise and be happy.

Cookbook I love are ';La Dolce Vegan';,';How it all Vegan'; and ';In the Garden of Vegan'; all by Sarah Kramer (and Tanya Barnard). They're great for new vegans because not too many of the recipes require meat, dairy or egg substitutes and the recipes are much of what you ate as a meat eater. I also really like Vegan Planet by Robin Robertson. It has over 400 recipes and most use only whole foods, not too much tofu, seitan, etc. Good luckAre the items on my list Vegan?
    Obviously, not fish sushi! :)

Avoid all packaged baked items if you don't check the ingredients carefully. Fig Newtons contain whey from milk, so that's out. Pop Tarts contain gelatin which is an animal byproduct (usually made from shellfish shells). Other baked goods might contain honey which is another vegan no-no.

If you trust the restaurant, veggie Chinese dishes should be fine. It would be unusual to use animal fat, canola oil is more typical. Watch for the sauces, though, some (like brown sauce) are built on meat or fish. If you're in a restaurant, ask: if you're shopping, read all the ingredients.

1: No, contains a milk byproduct (whey).

2: Depends. Some kinds are promised to be, yes: http://www.vegetarian-restaurants.net/Ve鈥?/a>

3: No, contains gelatin, which is animal-derived.

4: No. Not with cream, that's dairy. You can make soy-based ones, though.

    5. Depends. Most are, some aren't, check the ingredients or ask. The BK Veggie Burger Patty, for instance, includes mayo, which includes egg.

    6. Yes.

    7. Yes.

    8. Yes.

    9. Depends. Some are, check the ingredients. Most traditional grain-based cereals are, but avoid any with marshmallows (which contain gelatin), and be aware that some contain milk products.

    10. Yes. Bread wraps are normally vegan. Avoid homemade tortillas, though, which have lard.

    11. Yes. Flour is fine.

    12. Yes. White, brown, and powdered sugar are fine, at least.

    13. Depends. As long as it's veggie sushi, yes. The nori (seaweed) is a dried plant, and the rice and its flavorings are fine. Wasabi is fine. Of course, a lot of sushi has fish in it, so that's out.

    14. Depends. Look for high-quality dark chocolate, and check the ingredients. All milk chocolate and some low-quality chocolate contain milk products.

    15. Depends. Fresh coffee and tea are fine. Double-check if you're buying anything processed. Especially for Coffee things, since they very often add milk for taste.

    16. Depends. As I said, ask the waiter, or check the ingredients.

    17. Depends. On their own, fine. In practice, any restaurant that serves fried chicken or fish will use the same oil for them as they do for their french fries. So it might get contaminated by other peoples' meat but should be vegetarian on their own. Most places use vegetable-based oils, they're cheaper, but in non-chain restaurants it doesn't hurt to ask before ordering.

    18. Yes.

    19. Yes.

    20. Yes. The noodles are vegan. The flavor packets are usually not, check the ingredients.

    21. No. Most donuts contain eggs and/or milk.

    22. Yes.
pop tarts frosting probably have some kind of dairy in it. sushi is fine, as long as there's no fish in it. donut frosting might be an issue, donuts also might have egg in them. fruit smoothies probably not vegan, because there's dairy in them. and yes there is vegan chocolate. also whole foods has delicious vegan chocolate chip cookies!! good luck!!=)
    Pop Tarts definitely contain gelatin.

    Sushi is made of fish.

I'm pretty sure Colgate isn't vegan.

A lot of veggie burgers contain dairy/eggs. Make sure you buy the vegan burgers.

I'm not a Christian so I have no answer for your other question.
    1. Yes

    2. No. The calcium is animal based (crustaceans I think)

    3. Maybe. Most have egg or dairy

    4. Cream isn't vegan, it's dairy

    13. AS long as it's just vegetables.

    14. Yes. Some dark chocolate and there is soy chocolate.

    15. Yes (except maybe the sugar in it)

    22. Yes. AS long as there isn't gelatin added.

Most of us aren't religious. And I don't take the Bible literally... It's metaphorical. Also 2000 years and stuff is bound to have changed.
