How to eat tempeh, I'm curious?

I am a vegan and I tend to avoid soy products like they're a contagious disease that'll kill me, LOL.

I do very occasionally have tofu if it's already in a food I'm going to eat but nothing regular.

BUt my vegan role model (Tonya Kay) has convinced me through her website that maybe it's not a bad idea to try some.

So, my question is how do I cook it (do I even have too?) and what do I eat it with?

Thanks a bunch!!

Here you go.

The site has more than just this. How to eat tempeh, I'm curious?
Tempeh is a far better soy product for you than tofu because it is a fermented soy product. My favorite Tempeh recipe is from the book Vegan with a Vengeance. Someone posted it here- Spicy Tempeh and Broccoli Rabe With Rotelli http://www.recipezaar.com/Spicy-Tempeh-a…

It's good with or without the veggies, depending on how healthy you feel like being that day and what you have in the fridge. It's also easy to mess with. You can vary the ingredients as you feel necessary.

Another good way to eat Tempeh is as a substitute for Bacon. You can buy it packaged already like that or make it yourself with a recipe like this: http://www.tempeh.info/recipes/recipes.p…

I also often add the raw tempeh to my avocado roll sushi. Basically, sushi rice with brown rice vinegar added to it, nori sheet, avocado, tempeh, and toasted sesame seeds rolled up into a roll. Here's a recipe online but I have never tried this particular one: http://www.thesoyfoodscouncil.com/kidsre…

Hope that helps! Tempeh is one of my favorites.

Is this a good meal plan to lose weight?

Breakfast: Apple, orange, melon and berry fruit salad with 8 oz. soy milk (I'm vegan... yayy!!)

Snack: Raw vegetables, fruit, or whole grain crackers (i.e. Kashi鈾?

Lunch: Bean sprout/spinach salad with chickpeas, fat free feta cheese, and onion (or typical salad veggies, depending on how lazy I'm feeling =)

Snack: same as mid-morning snack

Dinner: Stir fry tofu with veggies, or three bean salad, or something along those lines (again, depending on how much I'm willing to cook/chop)

Snack: Sugarfree popsicle or more veggies and fruit

I'll also be burning at least 800 calories on most days (I do intervals on the treadmill throughout the day)Is this a good meal plan to lose weight?
Yes, that sounds fantastic! Very healthy! And with the beans, you get your protein. With this diet, I bet you'll be losing weight in no time!Is this a good meal plan to lose weight?
if you want to lose weight just eat tic-tacs and slurpees from sev levs
don't eat a damn thing

Becoming vegan when my parents won't cooperate!?

I have been eating vegan like 3-4 days a week (gave up dairy and eggs for medical reasons, never liked red meat or seafood), but I want to go 'fully vegan' and give up white meat. Problem is, my parents think meat is the only source of protein, even though I have shown and explained to them that you can get PLENTY of protein with soy milk, tofu, whole grains, beans, etc. Also, I'm still a teenager and living at home, so I have to eat what they cook, which often includes pork, chicken, turkey, etc. Also, they think me wanting to become vegan is just me being a picky eater, when really I want to do it for health/moral reasons! I've explained to them that it is healthier, better for animals, and the Earth, but they still aren't listening! How can I become fully vegan if my parents won't listen?Becoming vegan when my parents won't cooperate!?
You could kill your parents and eat them!

Becoming vegan when my parents won't cooperate!?

Good. I shouldn't think so. They care about you (your health) more than the misguided/deluded people on this forum (and you by the sounds of it).

'I have a legitimate question here and I would appreciate it if people took it seriously.'

Does this sound serious enough for you? You have been taken seriously; more seriously than you will likely understand (right now). Why should you get my time and attention and my 'seriousness'? So consider this: would you appreciate/respect it if I merely told you what you wanted to here (merely bleating/repeating more nonsense and propaganda regardless of Reality/consequences)? What would that imply about my sincerity or honesty? Or even my respect for your own intelligence?

Vegetarianism is not big, clever, cool, sane, sexy, spiritual, or even interesting, nor will it get you any special attention or backstage passes at concerts.

Opinion (belief) and truth do not constitute the same thing. You have (I presume) heard of a thing called Science? You can change/modify/adopt/discard a belief as you will, but objective Truth will not alter whether you like it or not.

Vegetarianism has no health/medical/environmental benefits whatsoever. It exists as a dangerous and harmful fantasy - especially to young people, especially girls (and those promoting it should feel ashamed of themselves - especially if promoting it to children/adolescents). These people have become dangerous (to themselves and others), incomplete and have not become wise (and worse, they do not know it and rarely care/know how to analyse/check/question such faulty beLIEfs rationally and thus self-correct like a genuine real scientist would). Yet they brazenly conduct the most perverse long-term experiments on themselves (and encourage others to do the same with a wild abandon all without 'earning' any real foundation upon which to base such decisions/opinions). Such people have proven themselves incapable of recognising Reality. You have been conned (by yourself especially). Do you still think that you possibly could have accurately worked this out? Do you really care to find out? Vege-types typically see only what they want to see.

No, vegetarianism is not a solution; it's a problem.

As vegetarianism constitutes a seriously unhealthy, harmful and (the most) unnatural diet (for a human), veganism propels the victim into a whole new and novel vista of hitherto unsuspected stupidity and self-destruction.

For your own sake why perpetuate a dumb and reckless decision based on incorrect/irrational/emotional/religious notions of (what you may feel is) morality or the laughable/dangerous make-beLIEve pseudo-scientific twaddle the vege-types hope to pass off as valid nutritional science... people rarely do what they do for the reason(s) they think they do (a vegetarian self-evidently hasn't a clue). Instead, does it not make sense to make a rational decision based on valid objective medical science (and no vegetarian or vege-website/book/magazine will help you find this out* - for obvious reasons)?

If you care about animal welfare (and rightly so) then choose meat/raw dairy/eggs (all of which constitute the most healthy and nutrient dense foods available) from animals which have been well looked after and properly raised, fed naturally and organically and then, suitably slaughtered (thus no cruelty involved anywhere); ideally from local small independent farms.

Is it ok for anyone to become a vegetarian? Yes, of course, anyone can do whatever they want (so long as they don't hurt me or my property) especially if they accept the consequences of their actions and do so with a prior full understanding of Reality. Is it ok for you to behave as a vegetarian/vegan? Yes, of course, absolutely... if you want to hurt yourself.

Simply ask yourself, why would you willingly self-sacrifice yourself (through destructive and silly dietary habits that will only do you harm) in order to feel 'good' about yourself? Take a deep breath. This is funny!

Alternative to acting sensibly and rationally: - move out and do whatever you want.Becoming vegan when my parents won't cooperate!?
The only thing you can do is calmly explain to them why you want to do this. Because you're not an adult, you do need to listen to your parents; they have control over your life. (I know this, trust me) But as I was saying, you'll need to be persistent. If your family is having pork, just don't eat any and don't get upset if they question you as to why. You'll need to tell them what your reasons are and how strongly you feel about this.
http://geniuscook.com/vegetarianism-bad-鈥?/a>
Be Yourself, and if that means eating no meat, or anything which comes from an animal, go for it.

How can you forget a mothers milk though, or the fact that lions kill for food to survive?

If you feel so set to live off of plants, you are still killing the branch your meal came from.

Trees have no CRY, no voice, plants in general, are deep beings, and you find it cool to cut them to nourish yourself, but can't see doing it to a Cow?

I would love to say that all the pain will go away, that no death happens, but it does, and will forever, that's our ability, to know, and while you wish not to eat off of the cattle who where born into this life, some people (most) know that it keeps us alive.

You tell me a purpose for a cow?

What do they do for mankind, for the world, it's a fact that they deplete the ozone, so you tell me?

Good luck, and just start cooking Vegan for your parents, cause you are in charge of the kitchen?
buy the book Slaughter House by Gail A Eisnitz and give it to your parents to read, it might help them to take you seriously, best of luck
That's a tough one. You say you have shown and explained but cite no source so I include some sources that have been useful to me. Perhaps another try?

I have been vegan for a year now. When I started I got two books that were great.

Rip Esselstyn is a vegan fireman who converted his whole shift to the diet (engine2diet.com).

jae steele, a nutritionist, had recently brought out her first cookbook ';Get It Ripe'; (arsenalpulp.com 275). I was a recipe tester for her next book, now out, ';Ripe From Around Here'; (arsenalpulp.com 312) and there are some awesome recipes in both.

There are many vegan athletes (bestveganguide.com). I'm sure that if you did a bit of searching you could find vegans in other careers.

I also began to bake my own bread using whole and ancient grains from the local Bulk Barn outlet (there may be a similar store in your area?) The bin labels have the protein content listed and they range from 16 to 20%!.

Even mushrooms have some protein I discovered.

Perhaps you could offer to cook a vegan meal once or twice a week?

I wish you all the best. Don't give up! Eventually you will win them over.

The Buddhists, who are vegetarians for the most part, say that if someone offers you a meal with meat in it, don't make a big fuss but eat a little to be polite.
If you really want to be vegan, you probably will have to start cooking. You can have something as simple as a peanut butter sandwich for lunch or pasta with marinara sauce and a salad for dinner (throw in a few beans if you want more protein).

You don't have to eat what they cook, just because you live at home and are a teenager. You might even have to buy some of your own ingredients, if they won't buy them for you. Just do some extra research on a healthy vegan diet, so your parents can see that you are serious about being healthy.

You just will probably have to take a lot of initiative if you want to make the full change to veganism. People don't like change, so your parents aren't likely to make it easy for you. Either do it part-time if you don't have time to cook or money to buy things, or else do a lot of things for yourself and they will see that you are serious.

You can even cook things the whole family would like, like bean tacos (they can add cheese or leftover chicken to theirs), pasta, salads, etc. Make enough to share and keep explaining what you have learned, and eventually they will understand.
Ask them to give you a month and see how that works out.

You could also try finding a vegan who is eating right to show them that vegans do have a healthy living.
it's not the proteins your body needs it's amino acids that form proteins, there are 20 of them and only meat and eggs contain all of them in sufficient quantity. to get all amino acids from vegetable you need to eat allot of different types of vegetable
It is not always easy being a teenager. You are beginning to realize that you are able to think your own complex thoughts, but are not yet at an age where everyone will listen or accept them. No longer do you simply accept what is told to you, but seek your own answers. Your parents are also probably beginning to realize this. Some parents have a tougher time allowing their children to branch out and begin to become adults.

This is also an age where you need to realize that there are reactions to the actions you take. You may want to give up meat, but that also may mean cooking and buying food for yourself. If you are already eating vegan, then there must be some foods in the house that are not meat. On the other 3-4 days of the week simply cook for yourself. You do not have to eat what they cook, and most parents will not force feed their children. There are many easy recipe cookbooks available.

Perhaps you could sit down with your parents and learn about vegan nutrition together. Explain how important it is for you. Tell them that they have raised you well, and that you are simply doing what all children will do eventually, and that is make decision for yourself. You hope that they will support these choices, and guide you, as you will become a better person through their gentle guidance, rather than force the way you think to coincide with their thoughts.
I really think the vegan diet is not good for you...you really need to eat diverse foods to lead a healthy life. Especially in your teenage years when the body is developing, nutrition is very important

Help on vegan / gluten free / not processed food diet ?

hey there!

so i'm a long time vegetarian and i've been toying with the idea of taking a like ';cleanse'; ... i was just reading about oprahs 21 day vegan/gluten free trial (http://www2.oprah.com/foodhome/food/clea鈥?/a> and it sounds like a good idea....

so i'd like some tips from you guys! i've said before i'm going to lay off processed foods but then i just forget i said i'm doing that and eat them... how do you remember?

i don't eat any meat. i don't drink milk. i don't eat eggs. i eat products made with them (cake, bread, etc.) if i must cook with eggs i buy free range.... i eat an obsessive amount of cheese!! i love it!!

so any tips of laying off the animal products, processed foods, glutenous foods....? any good recipes? will i end up eating a ton of beans and tofu?Help on vegan / gluten free / not processed food diet ?
The best thing is to cut out animal products cold tofurkey. I know that sounds hard but if you gradually cut down you are going to see that small chunk of cheese as a reward and set yourself up for failure.

Fake meats are really overprocessed. You might consider making your own at home, that way you know you're getting a more nutritious meat analogue. There are lots of recipes online.

I don't eat tons of beans and tofu so you probably won't either although tofu is really great when you figure out what to do with it. I prefer lentils over most other beans. They are pretty damn good.

Don't buy processed foods and you won't eat them, it's that simple. I rarely eat processed foods. I make nearly everything from scratch, even popcorn, breadsticks, fake meats, etc. It's very rewarding knowing that those extra preservatives and chemicals aren't going to be hiding in your body somewhere.

Most dry pasta is vegan. Ingredients are usually durum or semolina flour, water, niacin, riboflavin. Egg pastas will be fresh and sold in the refrigerated section or will be dry but say ';egg noodles';.

Breads are often vegan. Look out for L-cysteine, glycerine, lecithin, whey, and honey. Try an organic whole grain bread. It may have honey, but you may decide to continue to eat honey if you so choose.

Good luck to you! It's a lot easier than you think...and rewarding too.Help on vegan / gluten free / not processed food diet ?
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I do believe cheese is a no-no for a true vegan.
Strangely, tofu and MorningStar products are some of the most processed of processed foods. Many types are also high in fat and salt. I use these products with caution and try to follow a 1:4 ratio, 1 part MorningStar sausage with 4 parts fresh veggies, for example.

I made some major changes in my diet a year ago and I had to clean out my kitchen to do it. Having bad food around is not possible for me so I got rid of all of it. Also, I had to relearn how to shop at the store. I don't even walk down the aisles that are junk food. I shop the perimeter of the store, fresh produce first, dairy and eggs second, dry goods, and the bakery. Avoiding the urge to buy junk is the first step to better eating. Shop with a list and stick to it. (No one writes ';5 pounds of potato chips'; on their shopping list!)

At home, trim and slice a variety of fresh foods so that it is ready when you get hungry. Carry healthy snacks with you at all times.

Good luck!
enter g has egg replacement recipes, and i just bought some cake mix that didn't have any egg in it......there also this product called Simply Asian~ and it says it's vegan on the side...
I did a raw food/vegan cleanse. I just ordered the food through this website and it was easy for me. The first three days you miss having more variety, but after that no problem. You won't be able to eat cheese but you can supplement with fresh fruits/veggies/salads. they urge you to try and stick to their food for the best results, but I am young and not trying to improve my heart/cholesterol, etc so I saw effective results while adding in my own raw foods (for more variety).

By the end of the cleanse you will feel like you can eat this way forever. I only went back to eating cooked foods because I got sick and wanted something hot to eat.

http://naturesrx.wholefoodfarmacy.com/20鈥?/a>
First of all, if you are going on a cleanse, dairy is OUT. It is an animal product, after all...

I am going on one of these month-long cleanses shortly. Here are some suggestions:

--go off all gluten, which includes the egg noodles mentioned below because semolina is the endosperm of wheat, so it is a no-no on this diet (also, if you are trying to eat healthy in general, you have to avoid regular pasta or egg noodles that are not made with whole grains). Other sources of gluten include spelt, rye, barley and oats. Whole Foods has a whole grain corn tortilla (organic) that is only a buck for a dozen! Buckwheat doesn't have gluten, so if you can find 100% buckwheat noodles (Japanese soba), you can use this as a grain. Brown basmati rice is awesome and delish, and quinoa cooks within 15 minutes! You can find these in the bulk section of Whole Foods.

--Eat lots of raw fruits and veggies during your cleanse. The organic water they contain will flush out toxins.

--Beans but ditch soy for the month. Go to the bookstore or Internet and find recipes for seed and nut mylks. Processed soy (and soymilk qualifies as this) is iffy, according to some. But even if you want to continue using it, it's good to fast from it for a short time. You can also consume raw nuts as part of your diet, in addition to the beans and grains!

--Make soups during this time.

Good luck!

Why am I obese after eating disorder?

Please don't be mean.

I eat really healthy. I don't go near any red meats. I do eat chicken and fish on occasion but mostly I stick to hummus, tofu and other soy products for protein. I eat a ton of vegetables and fruits. I'm lactose intolerant so I can't eat dairy. I do allow myself desserts on occasion, but it's nothing excessive. Just on special occasions and they have to be dairy free anyway so it's rare that I get any. I don't drink soda, I don't eat packaged snack foods. I don't add butter. I cook with olive oil. I use whole grains.

All in all I'd say I get in around 1200 calories a day.

I don't exercise, but I can't. I have a medical condition that prevents me from exercising. But I don't just lay in bed either. I still move. I just can't go do strenuous exercise.

But yet my BMI is like 33. It hasn't always been 33. I used to have an eating disorder but now I'm 22 and pretty close to recovery. I mean my BMI has been all over the place but it's never been here and it's bothering me so badly that I just want to give up and go back to how I used to loose weight because this way isn't working. How can I loose weight the healthy way?Why am I obese after eating disorder?
metabolismWhy am I obese after eating disorder?
Well if what you are doing isn't working, then it's wrong. I think you know that what you were doing before was no good either. The important thing is to not get frustrated. First, unless you have a real good reason for it, limit the soy cuz it's not very good for fat loss. Next, count your calories accurately for at least a week; use fitday.com and keep track of everything you eat and measure everything. Then if you still think you're getting 1200 calories a day, and you're haven't lost any weight, the only thing to do next is to cut calories more, or use up more calories through exercise. I don't know what medical condition you have, and I'm not telling you what you are capable of doing, but I would be as open and honest with yourself as possible. For instance, if you have a problem with using your legs, there's alot of exercises using just your arms. In other words, if you can't do certain things at all, do alot of whatever you can do. Above all be happy and proud of yourself in everything you do.

So my doctor told me to eat 500-800 calories a day?!ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh how can i possibly do this?!!?

okay so heres the regular gameplan:

breakfast: 2 fullsize pizzas a plateful of waffels/panckaes, a bowl of cereal, a coupple of poptarts, a spicy breakfast burito and a coupple of organic sodas and a slimquick appitite supprecent

brunch: cinamon bun (one of the nice grapefruit sized ones) tea with a teacake, mac and cheese, yogurt with fresh fruit, some not so organic sodas and chips with salsa or sourcream (or yogurt as a substitute)

lunch: a coupple of subway fotlongs with no meat (im a vegitarian) a begal and cream cheese, part of the other nights dinner leftovers, fruit juice (i find it really groos to just drink plain water) and possibly a popsicle if the day is really hot.(or a smoothie withn slimquick appite supprecent)

afternoon snack:

peanutbutter with celery, or lofat cream cheese with celery, a garden salad, veggie chicken nuggets with ketchup, lofat slices of mozerella cheese with some tomato, a bowl of mac and cheese

6pm snack:

2-3 granola bars, a bag or two of pitachips/healthy stuff from trader joes

some garlic bread and rice with beans mushrooms celery and veggiepork, slimquick appitite supprecent ( whenever i drink the slimquick i do eat it before i start eating, or within the first 20 bites of my meal and drink it with the meal, throughtiout the meal)

dinner: a lasagna, veggie burger, slimquick, whole foods sweet potato orgnaic frifrieses, an egg spread on whole wheat toast, veggie corndog, potato salad, some nuts, fruit salad, scones, some quinoa or couscous with grilled tofu taop, fruit juice or organcic soda thne ravoili and some kind of epasta- spagetti or linguini or mac and cheese, then desert is some ice cream and some chocolate covered nuts etc, only dark chocolate and fat free icecream/ sorbert, maybe brownies or cake if someone brings me one of their leftover ones (alot of people seem to do taht..)

bedtmie schak:

a snadwich or something easy along with a burito and some kiwis or ornages, maybe apples

i go to bed and wake up four hours later and get really hingry, really hungry so i eat some ceral, maybe an omplette, a coup[ple of slimquicks to get me through the night, an ensure smoothie and a coupple of bowls of oatmeal.

so im clinically obese, 478 pounds. i ate like this all my life,. as a professional athlete i ate arround 12,000 calories a day, and got a sports injury and never stopped eathing taht way. i crap and piss ever 30 munites it seems, and my stomach is constantly empty! ive been rying to loose this weight for a while so i can go back to training and runing etc, but to no avail.

i taled to my doctor- she says my heart is superhealthy, and my cholestorol is sill in a great range!? yeat im obese?... hmm... she now tells me to eat between 500-800 calories a day, honey i work as a resturant chef and i cook homemade meals ebveryday bwecasue i cant stand most fastfood/storebought stuf! (most of tue stuff on this list is gomemade, i even mix flakes and nuts and grains to mkae my own ceral!)

so how on eARTH am i supposted to do this!? my belly is literally empty between meals. i told my doctor how terrible it was and that i couldnt stop. she said i still ahve a superfast metabolism, to stick to 500-800 calories a day, and that my insulin levels were causing most of the hunger. biut even when i ate a very low glycemic array of foods amnd monotered my insulin ( ive had alot of experiance with sugar and insulin levels during training) i still get superhungry!

at 24 its been a real bother, ive been like thsi for over 2 years now, and i keep gaining,. but what can i do1?

and how can i only eat 500-800 a day without putting myself into keosis or a catabolic state?! i wat to keep my muscle for the season of 20011, when hopefully il be back in.. but i need help1

anyone have an idea? i think i've reached the point of desperation! So my doctor told me to eat 500-800 calories a day?!ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh how can i possibly do this?!!?
Well being that you were an athlete im sure you have some kind of self-control and to lower you eating habits in such a drastic way its going to take every bit of self control. One way to help is to not have so much high calorie food at home and not to have as much food at home period so that there wont be a lot accessible. You would have to go to the grocery store more but then you wouldn't have as much to always get your hands on. You could also find some kind of hobby or activity to keep your mind off eating, like taking a class at a community college, volunteering or some other kind of activity. When you get the urge to binge eat you could go take a walk or something else like that.So my doctor told me to eat 500-800 calories a day?!ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh how can i possibly do this?!!?
How about learning to spell first, fatty.

Anyone with common sense knows that's too much food, eaten too often, all in one day. You must be so damn stupid.

You had me at cinnamon bun.
I believe that your addicted to eating and that it's an unhealthy habbit. You sound like your bored, not hungry. Find a healthy hobby. Get a puppy, take it for walks. Get outside and try not to think about your next meal before you finish your first one.
That's dangerous. You should probably go 1100 to 1500, go lower/good carb, more proteins. Maybe check out something like ';Biggest Loser'; books. They have a whole series out. If you have discount places near you (like Sam's Club, near me) you can get them like 1/2 the price of book stores.
It sounds like your doctor wants you to go on a detox diet, this is a kind of diet that just about keeps you going but not much more than that, if you can do it then the weight will drop off quickly, you have to see a doctor before you do this but as your doctor told you to do it then i guess its ok, you can find out about detox diets and how to do it at the detox diet site

http://www.detoxdiet.org.uk
Your eating a HUGE amount on unhealthy food.

Breakfast - Cereal / Egg's / Oatmeal

Snack - Slim fast Bar

Lunch - PB and Jelly on Wheat / Piece of Chicken Breast

Dinner - Chicken / Anything LEAN / Fish, etc.

Just slow down on the eating, get busy, Walk on a treadmill...

NO High carb foods. If you treat yourself, eat it in proportion.
eat whatever you want tell the doctor to **** off you dont need to lsiten to him
Sounds like you should get a second opinion. I can't imagine a doctor telling anyone to take in between 500-800 calories a day when 2000 would still cause weight loss.

If it's your insulin levels that are the problem, which in part is, then look into a low carb diet. I prefer the Paleo Diet. Meat, some fruit, lots of non starchy veggies. No calorie counting.

Fellow Asians, How do you eat right in U.S.A?

I moved to the states about a year ago and married an all American guy who says “Meal is not completed without meat!”

I fell in to his habit and gained 40 lbs WITHIN A YEAR!!! I was never this big and don’t know what to do with myself: very unhappy and miserable. I don’t think I eat any more than I did in Japan but WHAT I’m eating is completely different.

I want to ask all Asian immigrants. How do you eat right in U.S.A?

There is only ONE Japanese market around here and you know how hard it is to find reasonably priced imported products or any fresh Japanese vegetables. I also have to cook for my husband every night and I’m really tired of trying to add meat in everything. I don’t even want to look at beef. I wish I could eat rice. Vegetable and tofu but my husband won’t eat it.

Also, what do you do when you don’t have time to cook? What do you do when you are too busy working that you need to get something to eat fast?

Thank you for taking your time!!!Fellow Asians, How do you eat right in U.S.A?
If he really loves you then he should understand that you don't want meat and you are dying to eat your meal.

Don't worry you'll get used to the food here. we are staying here for years and have gone used to it ,now we don't crave for our food and tried food from different countries every now and then. Now all stores have INTERNATIONAL food, though not the same as back home but still something is better than nothing,

Once a while you can make your food and ask him to at least try it. may be he likes it. or if not one day he doesn't even will not make any difference.

You can buy frozen food when you don't want to cook. make sandwiches etc.

!!Fellow Asians, How do you eat right in U.S.A?
chik tikka yum yum rice and pea
stick to the good ol wok and you cant go wrong!
You'd be amazed how healthy latin american food is. Cocoa is way more healthy than green tea. Salsa won't make you fat. Quinoa will give you all your amino acids and will give you energy throughout the day. Spinach is a great source of calcium and vitamin A. Sweet potatoes

Cajun cooking uses a lot of fish, shrimp, peppers. Southwestern uses chipotles...and the chipotle grill is a great place for healthy fast food.

Sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamins and minerals. Using plain yogurt (ok, not latin american but...) will give you calcium and protein in your meals.
I'm 3rd generation Chinese and had to chuckle a bit at one of the comments that mentioned a Wok, which is Chinese and Not Japanese. We live in Silicon Valley (San Jose, California, USA) and we are lucky that there is a Ranch 99 Market and also a small Chinese independent market near us.

Actually, the Lucky and the Safeway near us carries alot of Chinese and Japanese vegetables such as the large and small Bok Choy which is really good for you and one that I really enjoy eating. Not sure what city you are in, but I guess the population of Asians is less than here. What I found interesting is that even the Costco near us in Sunnyvale, California sells Japanese rice, Indian Curry and other specialty items.

Maybe if you talk with the store manager possibly they might start carrying some of the items you enjoy using. If enough people ask for something, they probably will carry it.

The main grocery stores such as Safeway, Lucky/Albertson actually carry Napa Cabbage, regular size Bok Choy and also the baby bok choy, too.

You might try speaking with the store manager and ask them if they can start carrying certain items.

Actually, what might be even better is if you wrote a letter to Corporate headquarters and asked them to carry certain things at your store level. Get some of your friends to write also. If enough people request something, they might start to stock it.
Don't eat the beef. Make his meat on the side and add it to his dish last minute. Non-organic beef are fed chemicals to make them gain weight so they can be slaughtered at a younger age. Those chemicals go into your body and make you gain weight. I've cut red meat out of my diet, along with processed meats, and I dropped weight pretty quickly.
Most markets have a wide variety of fresh produce, even if it isn't what you are used to, you can make some good meals with what we have available. There is also a variety of soy and tofu products that are designed to mimic meat in flavor and texture - usually in the cold food sections. I suggest weaning him from his red meat addiction even if only a little bit. Include fish or chicken more and more often and beef less and in smaller amounts. If he complains, feel free to do what I do, tell him he's free to make his own meal if he doesn't want what you're making, and if he can't cook there is always peanut butter.
I'm not sure how it works in Japan, but in China, everybody have a bowl of rice and at the center of the table are large dishes of a large variety of foods. Everyone takes as much of anything as they want. You could try this with your husband; he could focus on the meat and potatoes and you, the vegetables.

Or:

There ARE a lot of healthy foods and vegetables in typical American supermarkets. When preparing meals, simply put more healthy stuff on your plate, and more meat on your husbands. :)
Ugh, i dont eat meat, only on fridays, because its fattening and expensive. Especially red meat. What i tend to eat every day for breakfast is raisin bran cereal, or some fruits. Sometimes, ill eat rice and some eggs, but i never eat the ';american-style'; breakfast: pankakes, cereal, doughnuts, toast, and sausages. For lunch, i would eat the nissin ramen (unhealthy, but im always in a hurry). and some rice or eggs. For dinner, pretty much the same. I dont eat alot, and im a college student, so i tend to save alot on food.
